I have a 5 year old neutered tom cat and am planning to get a kitten (8
weeks or younger). Am I better to get a male or female kitten when I
already have a male? Whatever I get will be neutered at 6 months old.

it really doesn't matter. At such a young age, the sexual hormones have not
developed, so it wont matter to the resident cat.

You'd do better for yourself and your cat to get one that is at least 12
weeks old and has been with its mom and siblings up until then. Also, one
who has had human contact since birth. Eight weeks and younger, the kitten
is still very unsure and will likely be terrified for a while and pretty
soon you'll probably have had enough of it's immature purrsonality.
