My neice took in a 9 months old kitten and is having trouble teaching it to use litter
box.  Do you people know of any good sites that I can refer her to that will help her?
Her e-mail and my response is below.

>>I take it from the remark about "in heat" that it is a female.

>>First question:  how long have you had it and had it indoors ??
>>Second question:  Is the litter box where it is easy for her to find
>>and use ??  Third question:  Do you have other indoor cats and if so
>>how many litter boxes ??

>>Some people try to hide the box so it is out of sight and expect a kitten
>>to find it and if it is in a new home the kitten has to become accustomed
>>to things let alone find a litter box.  If she knows where it is can she EASILY
>>get in and out of it and is it kept clean ??  I had one kitten that I took in that
>>would not use a litter box at first even if it had ANYTHING in it.  I had to make
>>sure that I kept it absolutely clean at all times.  Eventually she became so she
>>was not so fussy but I still need to clean it a couple times a day at least.  Also
>>how old is Hayden and do people try to pick the kitten up and hold it constantly?
>>If it is new it will need time to get used to things without having to worry about
>>being grabbed all the time.

>>When I took in mine I started out by keeping them confined to one room (I used
>>the bathroom) that preferably did not have carpeting and I put a litter box and food
>>and water in there.  I would spend some time with them each day and once I seen
>>that they used the litter box I moved it to my computer room / spare bedroom for a
>>couple days where I kept the food and litter box for others (I have 2 boxes for 4
>>babies and they are in different locations cleaned AT LEAST twice a day).

>>Also try Feliway which is a spray to keep them from going where you do not want
>>them to and if they look like they have to go put them in the box which you could
>>do every so often even if they do not look like they have to go.  GIVE IT TIME TO
>>LEARN !!  REMEMBER WHEN YOU WERE A BABY YOU DID NOT POTTY
>>TRAIN OVERNIGHT AND YOU HAD ACCIDENTS !!  Also if you have a news
>>server you might want to check out the cat news groups.
>>There is a lot of help available there.

If she's not spayed, said kitten is probably spraying - as in marking her
territory.  Get her spayed!!!!  No guarantee that this will fix the problem
as some cats, once they start spraying, continue even after they've been
neutered.  At nine months, a cat is no longer a baby, but a young adult, and
her body is full of raging hormones.

First, the cat needs to be checked for UTI or other medical problems.
Inappropriate urination is one of the first (and most obvious) signs of UTI.

Second, the cat needs to be spayed.  ASAP.

Third, try using a different type of litter (I prefer nonclumping), and have
at least two litter boxes.  Some cats will not use the same box for pee and
poop.
