Hello All!
We are having a devil of a time purchasing the usual "Cat Grass" that
our cats love so much. Just recently [here in North San Diego] both
Petsmart and PetMart have gone completely out of stock. It is something
of an inconvenience to have to trot all over town trying to find it;
sometimes they have it...sometimes not.
Does anyone have an alternative? Some digestive greens, other than
grass? Can I sprout "cat grass" or something else they'll like at home?
Please advise!
Many thanks for taking the time to respond!

I used to buy oats from a feed store (horse/cow feed) and grew oat grass. My
cat loved it.

Oat grass seems to be what's used in the "ready to eat" and "grow your own
at home" varieties. Going to the feed store is a good idea and regular old
grass seed does the trick as well. Spider plants work also.

Cat grass is usually just a combination of wheat, oat and rye grasses
(sprouts). Throw in a little catnip and they'll loooove you. :-)
Alternately, you could just order this:

Well my Tiara loves Round Lettuce! So if there is no grass, she is happy
with this. Other 4 though don't bother with lettuce...
Also you can just bring them the regualr grass from the outside! But it has
to be fresh or they wont even look at it :)

My local nursery sells "oats for cats" seeds. Gave the first batch to Mr.
Bonkers today. He went nuts with it.

You can also try your local grocery store - ask at the produce
department. I was going through the produce a couple weeks ago and saw
they they started carrying "cat" grass. Apparently, it's considered a
health food.

Hi Meghan,
Our stores do not yet have and cat grass. I have tried the "wheat grass"
and the cats sniff it and walk away.

Health food stores probably carry seeds for sprouting.

Any of the wide bladed crop grasses, especially oats and wheat are
popular with cats, but it's often difficult to find them in less than
enormous (ten pounds or so) quantities. I discovered whill trying all
sorts of things some years ago that very yound popcorn sprouts are
well appreciated - a few seeds wrapped in a paper towel (wrapped so
that they can grow out through the folds) and kept moist in an open
jar will soon provide a handful of shoots that can be cut off and
given to the cats. The only real advantage is that plain, untreated,
popcorn seeds can be purchased by the bag as popcorn for popping at
any grocery store. The quantities and prices are both reasonable.

Our cats love wheat grass. It grows wild in our garden from the wheat
straw that we use as mulch. If I were going to plant it, I would go to
the health food store and buy a pound or so of "Wheat" used for
sprouting.

I don't have a handy health foor store so I wasn't aware of that
source - wheat is indeed excellent: cats really like it.
I just checked the phone book - looks like someone did open one here -
I've been past the address many times and don't recall seeing it, but
it may still exist.
