Kitten refusing to sit on lap

Hi, we got a kitten (ragdoll) nearly a week ago. She is settling in well and
seems pretty happy. She also likes to follow us around and then curl up and
sleep or play next to you.

However, she doesn't seem to like it when you pick her up or put her on your
lap. She'll immediately jump off or struggle to escape, only to sit down
next to you! If you try and restrain her for a second and stroke her, she'll
start meowing and struggle more to get off.

Is this normal for a kitten, and will she eventually as she gets older enjoy
being on your lap? Also is there anything we should be doing to encourage
her?

Thanks alot

That's normal for some. My Sugar is exactly like that. She simply will come
on my lap when *she* wants and no other time. She definitely prefers to be
next to me and not on me.

Karen is right. Some cats are just that way, and from my experience, they don't
change. They'll be your best buddy, they will lie *beside* you, but don't pick
them up. My Frankie is that way. He was around 3 months old when I got him, the
very first time I picked  him up, he struggled to get down. I thought he was
just afraid, but he's 6 years old now, and he *still* hates to be picked up. He
still gets in my face, loves to be kissed on the head and petted, just not held
close.

I guess that I'll have to agree.  My first cat just loved to sit on our laps
but our new one (my mother calls her the little "Bin Laden") doesn't like it at
all!  She'll follow me around and sit right next to me but she won't go on the
lap.

Maybe in time she'll warm up to us?

She may grow into a lap cat, but don't count on it.  Some just never do.
Sasha
likes to sit next to me with her front legs on my lap but never her whole
body.
She will lay on me particularly in the mornings if I try to sleep past 6 am
but
she doesn't like being held.  I think it's a control thing...she prefers to
have it.
I actually prefer it this way.  Sometimes (like now) it's just too hot to
have
a cat demanding to be on your lap.  I get the best of both worlds, I can pet
her for hours and not end up wearing a cat hair suit.

Don't force anything with your kitten.  Appreciate her for the free spirit
she is.

It seems to be the rule --The more you want it, the less you get it --.

Tommy is exactly like that. Last week, after him being outside for 23 3/4
hours per day, I decided: "Hard luck, that's the cat we've got. If I don't
want to lose him completely, then I have to let go." And, interesting
enough, he cuddled into my bed for two nights in a row after giving me a
good wash. And, boy, it was hot with this furball close to me, but I enjoyed
it!

Be thankful that the cat follows you and enjoys being near you, and that you
don't have to get rid of the hair on your clothes all the time.

Hi not all cats like to curl up on ur lap n sleep or be played with. Ive had my
cat since it was 5 weeks old and now she is 2 and she refuses to sit on my lap.
Dont get too stressed about it n just enjoy playing with it n strokin it
whenever u can. Maybe u could try to train her by giving her treats if she
stays on ur lap?

Kittens like people seem to have different traits. I've had several kittens
that weren't lap cats.

It isn't that they don't like you. They just don't seem comforable curling
up on a lap. Just accept it's part of their personality.

Part of it may be temperature control. You lap is warmer than the bed,
couch, etc. Perhaps in the winter she may want your lap but don't count on
it. This is exactly why my rescue group encourages people to adopt adults
that we know are lap cats if they want a lap cat. With a kitten you never
know for sure what behavior you are getting. They are all cute and playful.
One of mine slept on the pillow by my head and then at about five months he
moved off the bed completely to sleep at night.
