Before we went to the scoopable product for this purpose, we *litterally*
(pun intended) had to deodorize the house daily because of urine collection
in the litter pans. The problem was somewhat alleviated by putting a
special deodorant in the pans, but it was difficult to find something that
the cats did not find objectionable. Even so, we were merely covering up
the problem and not really solving it.
Each weekend we spent much time emptying the (10) pans, washing and
deodorizing them and refilling them with new clay litter. Even with the
special, thick, plastic paper liners in the pans, diligent little claws
could mangle through them, allowing the urine to seep through into the pan
proper.
Several years ago we began using scoopable litter, and the ease and
cleanliness was immediately apparent. With this many cats and this many
pans, we easily go through 60 to 70 pounds of product a week. Although it
is expensive, the benefits far outweigh the cost.
I buy it in bulk amounts, usually six 40-pound tubs at once.
The downside to scoopable is that (1) it cannot be flushed and has to be
carried to the curb for the dustman to dispose of; and (2) because it is
grainier and has a cement property, the cats more easily track it around the
house. Therefore, the carpet require a thoroughly thorough vacuuming before
the steam cleaner hits it. Otherwise you could end up paving your living
room floor.
An alternative to this kin of litter is pine nuggets made from pressed
sawdust that reverts to form when wetted by you-know-what. Pine nuggets
release a constant, faint, pine scent into the air, and seldom is there a
scent of *cat*. The downside to it is that not all cats will use it.
The upside is that it is easy to dispose of. When all used up, the product
can be dumped into the neighbor's flower beds.

I've often wanted to empty the litter box on the lawn of folks who let
their dogs poop in our yard and don't clean it up.
