One of our cats does not take very well to travelling, even just a few miles
by car. Does anyone know anything safe and effective that will calm him
down for a trip across town?

Try spraying Feliway in the corners of the carrier about 15 to 20 minutes
before putting the cat in.

Talk to him quietly. My cat used to go buggo in the back -now he's on
the front seat for journeys he can see me feels better. When he was in
the back gently talking along with a radio show or singing used to help
immensly. Feliway as noted by someone is also a good idea and v.
effective.
