As a relatively new cat owner. Should a cat constantly have some sort of
flea medication year round or it is neccessary only in the summer months. My
cat is indoor only. Also I have seen flea collars and drops you put on the
back of the cats neck. Which should I use and why. I want to get this sorted
before we get into summer. I heard that is when you get the most fleas.

If you don't have any animals that go outside...I would just keep an eye out
for fleas and kill them when needed. I've had pieces since she was 5 weeks
old and shes never had fleas and I've never used a constant flea med. The
best thing is not to over use flea meds so the fleas do not become immune to
that medication. Also, if you do encounter a flea problem, remember to
switch the meds once a week until all are gone, so as not to make them
immune. If your kitten has fleas and is still young...I'd take him/her to
the vet and have them tell me what is safe to use on my cat.

No. There's no reason to do this. If there *is* a flea problem, use Advantage
or Frontline, or Revolution. They are the safest, most effective meds on the
market, and one application keeps the fleas off mine for over two months. YMMV.

All flea products are poisons and should not be used unless actually
needed. The only generally available drops that are even reasonably
safe are Advantage and Frontline, and they are expensive. The cheaper
drops - I won't mention any names - can make cats sick and even kill
them (as I learned the hard way) just before the product was pulled
from the market for relabeling.

Fleas generally start in September/October, but that's not to say they can't
be there. A flea can live in your house for TWO years without an animal as
a host. Even if you have no pets, you can very easily bring a flea into
your house, it can jump on your pants leg outside, next thing you know you
have fleas.
Fleas can be hard to see - they are tiny, but keep in mind the JUMP, they do
NOT fly (those are gnats, not fleas). You will usually see flea dirt,
notice the pet scratching more than usual, or bumps on the skin.
Use a good flea product, such as Advantage or Frontline. DO NOT USE
HARTZ/SERGEANTS! Can be deadly (do a google on Hartz for more info).
