homes for strays?

bob - 14 Apr 2004 01:56 GMT I've been feeding 10-12 stray cats for a couple yrs in a residential neighborhood in Central Florida. The neighborhood management has decided to catch the cats and turn them into the local animal shelter (where they kill them in 5 days if no adoption). They're outdoor cats but not aggressive at all. They like being petted.
Is there anywhere in Central Florida that I could take them, like a "refuge?" I'd be happy to provide for spaying/neutering of them.

If they have space, they may be able to take them. Rescues may be willing and able to transport the cats a little further to other shelters with some space. If they don't have space for all of them, is it possible for you to take in the remainder and give them over one or two at a time, as space allows?
By the by, an impound facility for strays is not the same as an animal shelter. Impounds will hold for a state-appointed number of days and then euthanize if the animal isn't claimed or adopted out. Some shelters still have a time limit, but many will hold onto adoptable animals for quite awhile (and will either do the medical work - vaccinations, spay/neuter, testing for FIV/FeLV - themselves, or will have the adopter bring the animal back for such things at a later date).
SPCA of Central Florida : http://www.ohs-spca.org/ Bay County : http://www.adoptme.org/ http://www.animalshelter.org/ http://www.humane.org/ http://hssc.org/ http://www.saveourstrays.com/florida.htm
All these and more at a Google search for >"Humane Society" Florida<.
Please let us know what happens.

'cedes - 14 Apr 2004 08:45 GMT Bob, this is just terrible. I have a suggestion for you, to beat the neighborhood association at their own game; Why don't you build some kind of awesome safe secure enclosure for them....on your property. Is this a possibility?? http://www.just4cats.com/page7.html or http://www.cat-world.com.au/cat-worldenclosures.htm OR how about this idea? http://www.lisaviolet.com/cathouse/backyard.html Put these cats safely in your backyard, and have the cat-proof barrier, to keep them in your yard. This would be the answer! First you would have to install this on your backyard fence. Once it is securely in place, get a hold of as many cat traps as possible, and start trapping. As you trap each cat, take it to your vet and have it spayed/neutered. Then bring it back to your house and release it to the safety of your OWN back yard. Carol

A 6' fence of the chicken mesh works as cats won't climb the mesh fence once they test it with claws & claws get caught. Homes for Strays? Bob I empathies with your predicament. I've posted re: this type prob, feedings strays and how to find them a home/farm. A Home for Hobo? The fault goes to the one feeding the poor cats -- but as you can see it's very hard to get help. These municipal shelters/pounds... will kill them & all cats in 3-5 days, some sell them to research... A horrible fate after being caged usually with dogs also slated for death. Often feral type cats are killed at once as they are not adoptable (so claimed) due to 'personality' problems. As are sick cats, unfriendly, vicious, dirty... Basically if the cat isn't wearing a collar tag & can't be identified and returned for $ they are killed or sold for $. Thus are the facilities paid - they get nothing to capture, hold & feed a cat. FIGHT LEGISLATION, fight local bi-laws to have these barbaric facilities improved. Bob, I know it's ridiculous as suggested you pen in your yard and keep all cats you feed. I agree it's much better to feed cats in need than not at all. It is a fine thing to do if that is all that can be done & you're a good person for it & for this effort to help the homeless cats. I suggest; look for farms, look for rescue organizations, call the local newspaper get them to run a story on the cats predicament..., as a last rescue option - if nothing else --- I suggest relocate the cats to a wilderness area and provide food for them in the new 'private' spot. Get creative in transporting them. Can you pick them up or cage them? It may sound extreme but if nothing else try capture, release & feed. Thus is the fight to save our cats & animals from the predicaments we created. If you asked a cat they'd chose life - let them have it!!!!

Mmhsb - 21 Apr 2004 06:44 GMT What type of place is it the $400.? That's 12 cats? Can you prepare a flyer asking for donations and go door to door in your building asking the residents to help raise the money to take the cats to a sanctuary? type of place? I'd try to raise resident appeal since you live in an apt. bldg. and the cats are a joint mission as many must have been left behind by tenants. Actually a "Left Behind" headline could be a catchy title to inspire goodwill, donations & participation within the bldg. --- there's got to be others in the bldg. that can live up to the challenge with you. Did you try the link I left earlier, http://www.artzwild.com/cat/usrescue.html might help. On an internet search I did come up with one10thlife listing as an add at another kitty site -- when clicking on the link, page cannot be displayed again. Will have to try later with firewall off & let you know. You know Bob I got the local newspaper involved after calling the Fed's on the independent shelter here with the barbaric 3 days of life for unclaimed cats & their poor treatment of cats. Though a dismal situation I was surprised that at least the newspaper article (journalist jumped at the story) raised public awareness. For the most part the Town had no idea where & what became of homeless cats. Maybe post an add yourself --- maybe you can get help, if you want it. If not you'll be doing another great service with publication of municipal bi-laws that only pay to kill cats/dogs...in the tax payers funded shelters.

Greetings Earthlings,
I run a cattery here where I live, whereas my wife runs the local animal shelter in town. In the animal shelter, strays, unclaimed, feral and abandoned cats and dogs get 10 days to be picked up or adopted. The dogs are usually no problem, you advertise free puppies or dogs and very few people show up, but if you advertise the same dogs for $100 apiece, for some insane reason everybody wants one! I guess people feel more secure in thinking their dog is worth something. As far as cats go several are bought or adopted each week, but the 30 or 40 that are left over after the ten day waiting period are brought home to the cattery to be euthanized. (My favorite part as most of you know) I have raised my Pitt-bulls on cat-food (that is, they eat cats) so they don't like very much else, because they like to kill their prey for themselves. So *remember* this, next time you pass by your local animal shelter, and think to yourself "could this be happening in my town?" because its a guranteed thing that cats that pass the 10 day mark in my town end up as chow for the Pitts.(After some fun scientifical experimentation of course) So be sure to love your cats, because if I get my hands on them I will love them to *DEATH*!!

Did you try the link I left earlier, [quoted text clipped - 34 lines] > > Mars Project (In Uranus) You're lucky your pitts didn't come across my cat because your dog would have been ripped apart and I'm not joking one bit. My cat attacked dogs and every dog she went after shitted their pants. Your pitts would be no exception. Guys that hate cats are fags, they think dogs are macho or something.. the sign of a bully and we know bullies are fags that try to show the opposite. If even the average cat was the size of a dog, the cat would tear the dog apart like a piece of paper. One fag (guys that think dogs are so tough) said to me once "dogs are like bouncers and cats are like ninjas" so I said "yeah, but the ninjas always win" you should have see his face turn red. Pitt bulls what a joke... let it live out on the streets by itself and see how many cats it can catch lol, good luck to the dumb dog.

I like my ferals cut and cubed in a fat burrito with mexican rice, onions, cheese and refried beans. I've never tried them on the barbaque, sounds tasty.

I have friends down in SE Louisiana where nightly dog fights are as common as crawfish. When a pitt gets tore up so bad that the owner doesn't want to pay for a patch job, they just drag him down to the bayou and toss him in. It is seldom that an injured dog can make it back to the bank before a gator gets him; but if so, then they just toss him in again.
What is really exciting to watch is when a pup turns out not to have the necessary spunk to fight in the pen like the breeder expects, and they dispose of him whole that way. A feisty pitt pup can really stir up the water, and it excites the gators who rush to the scene.
Alligators need to eat too.

Mars Project - 26 Apr 2004 14:51 GMT > > Greetings Earthlings, > > [quoted text clipped - 36 lines] > > --Geno Greetings Geno, I totally agree, but we don't have gators here, so if a dog loses a fight or puts up a poor fight he gets to swim with the piranhas, its beautiful really, watching as they strip a dog of their flesh while they are still alive.

Unfortunately, here in Texas earlier state gubernatorial administrations ate them to extinction. So, the State outlawed dog fights as a remedy.
But just so we don't get off topic here, we have a lot CATfish.
