Outdoor Shelter Suggestions?

Arubalisa - 24 Feb 2006 17:45 GMT We have a stray in our neighborhood who we are caring for. You cannot get near him anyway :-( Unfortunately we are unable to take him in at this time, due to finances and our other 5 kitties, one who was just Dx with CRF.
It seems "Whitey" is living in a cement drain at the rear of our property. Where he goes when it rains is anyone's best guess. Fortunately living in Georgia, the winter has not been bad. Whitey gets water and dry food outside the door daily. I assembled a cardboard box with some towels inside to see if the cat would use this as shelter. The oppusums have gone in to check it out, and Whitey will go in it when I place the food inside, but he will not sleep there. Even in the pouring rain :-(
For shelter..in that Dh is not a carpenter, we would need to invest up to $100. Have done a little research online and would of course take any suggestions here :-) Is there a way to get Whitey to accept our offer of a dry place to sleep if we make the investment?
NMR - 24 Feb 2006 17:55 GMT do it your self dog house can be used it you want something permanent put some hay down in the bottom of it for warmth. Since you want to invest about a $100 the dog house is $70
you can use these as examples if you got the tools and the time probably make one for less than $50

How about a dog house or something like that with hay put inside. Should have a door in both the front and back though. If an animal at night tries to come in one of the doors, the cat can run out the other.

>LMR Hemmaholic - 25 Feb 2006 14:29 GMT You can also get two plastic totes, one larger than the other. Add a layer of straw in between the two, packed tightlyu, and then cut a hole in one end just big enough for the cat to get through, add more straw as bedding and lid the inner tote, add more straw then snap the outer lid in place. Place the "cat house/shelter" in a secluded spot with the opening away from wind and preferable facing some sort of out building. You can set a couple of concrete blocks on top to weight it down. I'd also be selective to place it where it will be shaded during the heat of the day.
To be a little inventive when cutting the "door" do not cut completely though the outer tote and you can bend it upwards as a "roof" to help keep rain out..
I made a similar "cat house" for a feral cat and also put his food inside to keep others from getting it. It did not appear that he used it for sleeping at first, but when I would open it to check the bedding, etc, it was quite evident that the cat was sleeping in it.
Just a thought. Then you can use the remaining money to rent a trap and have the cat fixed.

Incredible that anyone would let her go at all, much less abandon her declawed. Is she all white or does she have other markings?
Arubalisa - 17 Mar 2006 05:26 GMT Oh that beauty is not mine. It was posted by one of the other respondents. __ http://www.hoosierkitties.com Resource Links for You About Your Cat

She was adopted by a wonderful woman and her mother, but I still keep Whitey's picture on my computer desktop and miss her every time I log on. Every time I hear about a cat named Whitey, I wonder what they look like.
Arubalisa - 17 Mar 2006 17:06 GMT I promise to post a picture of Whitey as soon as I can get her out of her carrier long enough :-)
Arubalisa - 24 Mar 2006 20:13 GMT Not very white, and my daughter changed the name to Snowy, but a beautiful care nonetheless... http://www.hoosierkitties.com/boys/snowy.htm __ http://www.hoosierkitties.com Hoosier Kitties- Resource Links for You About Your Cat http://www.arubabound.com Aruba Bound!

[quoted text clipped - 3 lines] > About Your Cat > http://www.arubabound.com Aruba Bound! Wow, what unusual coloring. She looks like she has some orange tabby in her background. I don't have web access, so I posted a .jpg of my rescued Whitey on the usenet. Here's the link:

Arubalisa - 25 Mar 2006 05:07 GMT Can someone explain how to access the usenet link from the Google Newsgroup rec.pets.cats.rescue? I would love to see your Whitey!
Snowy has such wild markings...like you said, a little bit of orange, definitely some bengal looking stuff going on and this big black sold strip down 3/4 of her back and then of course that white fluff underneath and on the paws... __ http://www.hoosierkitties.com Hoosier Kitties- Resource Links for You About Your Cat http://www.arubabound.com Aruba Bound!
bearclaw@cruller.invalid - 26 Mar 2006 16:33 GMT > Can someone explain how to access the usenet link from the Google > Newsgroup rec.pets.cats.rescue? I would love to see your Whitey! Sure, just google the group <alt.binaries.pictures.animals> and search for Whitey.
It's a great group for pictures of animals of all kinds.
bearclaw@cruller.invalid - 26 Mar 2006 22:09 GMT > Can someone explain how to access the usenet link from the Google > Newsgroup rec.pets.cats.rescue? I would love to see your Whitey! Well, I tried going through google and couldn't do it, so I opened an image hosting account to post Whitey's picts. Here are the links to two pictures of her:

Hemmaholic - 25 Mar 2006 15:02 GMT I wnet to your link hoping to see pictures of "Snowy", but saw, instead, images of a tabby, much like my senior cat 'Baby'. I even checked all the other phots of the other cats.. Has me scratching my head!

Arubalisa - 25 Mar 2006 16:35 GMT Hemma, my 9 year old daughter picked the name Snowy...I tried and tried to convince it that it was a name usually reserved for a kitty with a majority of white fur, but she stood firm.
Hemmaholic - 26 Mar 2006 09:37 GMT Okay! Now it makes sense! Well, 'Snowy' looks very much like my senior female feline, 'Baby" - again, daughter named her, not me. But my daughter was 20+ years old at the time! Don't see any Bengal going on in your Snowy or my Baby, perhaps a touch of Maine Coon Cat, which do have the stripe down the back as well as the tufted foot pads.
Snowy is a lovely kitty and looks to have a very sweet disposition. Your lucky she chose you as her people!
Your "blue" (gray) kitty does look like he has/is a marbled blue Bengal and l;ooks a lot like my purebred Blue Spotted Bengal, especially in the face. Your boy has a very Bengal head and ears as well. He's quiite handsome.
