Cat Forum / General Topics / August 2003OCD Cat?
I'm wondering what strange behavior(s) your cat(s) may have. I mean besides the general run of the mill things that cats do all the time (like the sudden decision that they just *have* to be in the next room, right *NOW* and zooooom off they go). Here are a couple odd ones I am submitting on behalf of my cat, Max: First, he must meow LOUDLY after coming out of the cat box until somebody pays attention to him. I don't know if he's proud of what he's just done or what, lol. Second, walking in to a room he's fine but (here's the obsessive/compulsive thing) a lot of times when he comes out of rooms he'll stop about a foot or so away from the doorway, sniff, look and then leaps as far as he can into the other room and kind of runs away from the door for a couple feet - much like when you were little you leapt in and out of bed because you knew if you didn't the boogeyman who was hiding under it was going to grab your ankle. Anybody else have cats with strange obsessive/compulsive type behavior? I assume sometime early in her life, she had a run in with a snake. Now anything that resembles a snake-hubby's belt, tossed on the bed, a wrinkle in the blanket, the cord to the vacuum.... she just goes into what I call halloween cat mode. Her hackles raise, and her ears flatten, and if you even dare touch her, she spits, hisses, jumps, attacks.... This behaviour transforms a mellow, loving cat (I call her 'kitten-baby' because she will willingly let me hold her on her back, toss her across my shoulder, like a baby needing burped, etc.) into a wild beast! She bit clean through my knuckle once, when I had her in her 'pouch' and pulled the air line out of one of the aquariums to change the stone. She saw that thin, round, snake-like air hose, and went ballistic. I have never seen a cat get spooked over something like this. D. > I'm wondering what strange behavior(s) your cat(s) may have. Poor thing, sounds like she's got it bad, I'd hate to think what happened to scare her like that! My cat does this, runs down the hall yammering incessantly about something that sounds *really* important. When he comes in, though, it generally seems like he just wants attention, because once I pet him, he's quiet and mellow (although he will hold a conversation with you if you say, "What?" or talk or meow back to him). Maybe they really do just want fussing, but it really is just like you say, that Timmy-fell-down-the-well kind type of thing, really trying to get your attention about something that is obviously important to them! Ann Sometimes Tiger will run across the room but stop about every five feet and vigorously lick his side and then continue to run. "Positive results within a year, or your mania back." My Siamese used to find me to tell me she had used the litter pan. She wanted me to scoop it -- then she was satisfied. Tootie (My current > companion) will come and check it out after scooping -- I guess to see > if I have done a thorough job of scooping. Mine do this, hang about and watch me while I'm cleaning it out, and then christen it again immediately after! Ann :) I have this problem with both of mine. Oscar will meow at you until you follow him to the litter box and scoop. At which point he smugly smiles and wanders off. And as soon as Fozzie hears you scooping, he runs in and does his business. Makes you wonder what they do when I'm not at home!! Oscar's other OCD is not to be picked up and petted, but will demand you lay down on the couch so he can sprall across your chest with his tail on your face and want his ears scratched.
