Cat Collars

I have recently bought one of those electromagnetically operated cat flaps
as my house seemed to be turning into the local drop in centre for all the
cats in the neighbourhood.

My cat has always worn a collar, the type she has at the moment is one of
the ones with the safety catch fastener that comes apart if the cat gets
stuck on anything.  My problem is that the magnet which operates the cat
flap will not fit over the safety catch on the collar.

I don't really like the idea of a collar with a buckle as there are a lot of
trees where I live, and I don't think I could take the stress of worrying
that my cat had hanged herself while I was at work.  Are there any other
types of collar that are safe for cats.  I have seen the elasticated type in
the pet shop.  Are these safe? Or does anyone know where I can get a collar
with a very small safety catch.

I am very leery of those safety catches.  It takes a huge amount of pull on
my part to get them open.

I've totally switched over to the elastic collars, and highly recommend
them.

I test them before I buy.  Some of them are harder to open than others but
I've always found the ones that I've had OK.  I think I might go for an
elastic one next though if everyone thinks they're Ok.

That's what I use for my cats too.

Both of my cats have a safety catch collar. Yesterday I was changing a
light bulb, and the light assembly itself was on the ground while I
was doing this. Somehow, one of the cats managed to hook his collar
onto part of the assembly. He had a quick moment of panic - and the
collar released.

So, I can recommend the Hartz quick-release collars, anyway!
Reassuring.

I brought one for one of my cats, it was useless as the magnet gets caught
up on the ring that holds it,  so it didn't touch the flap,  so I took it
back paid the extra and got the Staywell infra-red which fitted straight
into the original hole..... really works well, but if one of the other cats
is with them they would be able to get in too.
