My sister's new additions

My sister has been wanting to get a cat, but it has been forbidden by
her husband.  He doesn't hate cats, but just doesn't want a litter box
in the house, shedding on the furniture, etc.

A few days ago someone dumped 4 kittens on the property.  Two girls,
two boys, about 4 months old, very friendly.  She scooped them up and
put them in the backyard.  She's going to give them to a rescue group
to put up for adoption, but since one is black and three are tuxedo,
she's waiting until after Halloween no matter what the hubby thinks.
However, every time he goes out they crowd around and adore him.  He
might be giving in...  :)

Keep ya posted!

As a dog person turned cat person, I can truly say that you have to
spend time with cats before you can appreciate them. I never disliked
cats, but they were always too aloof for me. Now that I live with my
girlfriend and her cat (recently "adopted" by me, too), I've come to
appreciate their special qualities. They aren't overtly affectionate
like dogs, but have their own charm.

I hope the cats "grow on" your brother-in-law after they spend some time
together. If your sister's place has a nice backyard, a litter box in
the house might not be an issue. Shedding will, though ;-)

Best wishes to your sis and her new kittens,
Warren

This depends on the cat.  Many cats are overtly affectionate.  Some
*are*  aloof. Some act friendly towards people they know but shy away
from strangers.  Our vet recently had someone "return" a pair of
really sweet adult cats that had been adopted from the clinic because
the a.shole decided that they were too "needy" and "clingy" for her.
Luckily, someone else adopted them soon after and is delighted with
them.

You take what the universe gives you.  Are you going to return a kid
because he's into books instead of baseball?  I wanted a cat that was
just like Bandit, a neighborhood cat that used to come visit and watch
TV once in a while.  A really pretty, blue-eyed, laid back cat.  I had
a cat practically fall into my lap that was exactly like Bandit... in
appearance, but she wasn't at all the laid back, chill-out kind of cat
he was.  In fact, shortly after her arrival, she "chose" the name
"Kamikaze."  Not exactly want I hoped for, but 15+ years later I sure
as heck like her, rowdy quirks and all.

I can't imagine it, either.  On the other hand, I adopted a wonderful little
blind cat (Duffy) several months ago.  He had been returned to the animal
shelter TWO YEARS after he had been adopted.  The woman who returned him
said he was "a wonderful cat" (which he is!) but she was returning him
because he had learned how to get to her pet birds and killed one.
According to her, he was also teaching her sighted cat to get to the birds.
As if anyone couldn't figure out that cats and birds may need to be kept
separate!! He is an incredibly loving, intelligent, and well-behaved cat.  I
just can't imagine anyone giving him up, yet she returned him to the
shelter.  The shelter staff obviously tried to give him every opportunity to
survive because he was there from November until I adopted him on Feb. 1 --
but that meant that this lovable little fellow spent several months in a
cage.  He really looked scraggly and was much too thin  when I adopted him,
and the people at the shelter told me he wouldn't eat much.  He is beautiful
now -- at his normal weight and has lovely, silky fur.

bet he weakens ;-)    if she makes sure the litter box is well away from
where he sits and sleeps and the kitchen etc!  and uses air freshener and
makes double sure she empties the box every time its used more of less, he
wont have any reason to moan ;-)

she will have to make sure none of his clothes gets cat hairs on it, and
vacuum more than normal including the settees and bed.... he will weaken I
am sure

good luck to her and the babies, keep us informed

For picking up cat hair, try the reverse brush.  If you stroke one
way, it picks the hair up and when you stroke the other way it
releases it.  You can then pick it off and discard it.  I bought my
last one at K-Mart.  I actually have four around the house.  They are
good clothes brushes too.  MLB
