I have a sick cat that will not eat or drink.
I've tried to force feed him with little success.
Any suggestions would be welcome thanks.

Brian,
If your kitty has not been to the vet or is not receiving veterinary care,
that would be the first place to start.
Assuming that he has been to the vet, a couple of ideas -
First, it is very important that a cat has enough water and food or the cat
may become so weak that he
cannot eat. An application of subcutaneous fluids can really help a cat
feel better. I had a severely ill
cat several years ago and learned to do it at home (not hard at all,
although it worked best when the fluid
was heated up to just body temperature). The vet can do it and it might
just be what he needs to start
feeling better.
Feeding liquid broth with a syringe helped my cat. (a vet or a feed store
should have a feeding/medication syringe (without
a needle)). I mashed up a bit of canned cat food and tuna and added the
water from water packed tuna and it helped her.
Even an eyedropper can provide a little liquid, but it would take great
patience to provide enough liquid with an eyedropper.
What is the problem that he is not eating?
Good luck!
Allan

Thanks for your advice.
The cat is a 8 year old male which seems to have an infection around
the nose (some congestion) so the cat must have lost smell (and maybe
taste) for food.

Hi Brian,
You might try sprinkling something like Parmesan cheese on the food to make it
stinky so the cat will eat. Good luck,
Lauren

What advice has your vet given you so far?

help get water into it's month.

You might try baby food (without onion). It would be thin enough to use the
syringe to feed the kitty as well and could kick start the appetite.

Brian,
When I had to syringe feed one of my cats I mixed his wet food with
some water and some Nutrical in the blender and syringe fed him that
3x daily. It's not fun trying to syringe feed a cat. I wrapped him up
in a towel and would give him about 1/4 of the syringe at a time so he
wouldn't gag and vomit it all up. I did this for about a week before I
could finally coax him to eat by offering some nice stinky tuna fish.
HTH.
Karen
