Anyone ever notice any odd behavior in a cat when they first discover
a mirror?  This morning Bonnie was watching me in a full length mirror
in my room while I was getting dressed for work, just staring at me,
though I noticed she was staring at herself, too.  I was behind her
and I guess she thought I was in front of her because when I walked
past her to the hallway she was still watching me in the mirror.  She
must have heard I was behind her because she turned to look at me,
then bolted straight up in the air and then lightning fast down the
hall away from me.  Her reaction was funny and I couldn't help but
laugh, though she ran from me until I had to leave for work.  That was
the strangest reaction I've ever seen and wondered if anyone else had
similar experiences?  Bonnie is a former feral and still semi-feral
~7-8 month old.

When I first moved to Denver, I rented an apartment that had closets of
full-length mirrors for doors.  As soon as we were in, Chase noticed the 'evil
kitty' in the mirror and spent most of his time charging the mirror, trying to
get the evil kitty.  I was so afraid he'd end up brain-damaged from running
headfirst into the mirror.

After awhile, he got used to the 'other kitty', but he'd still hiss at it to
let it know who was boss.

Ernie's done that before. Of course, every once in a while he just
freaks out, like he's having a flashback - I'm guessing he was either in
'Nam or indulged in too much LSD during his youth...

:)  Well I've never seen a reaction like she had, that's for sure.
After I posted my original I thought about it and she isn't 7-9
months, she's more like ~10 months now.  Whoa, time sure flies.

All my cats have pretty much found themselves fascinating in the mirror...for
awhile, 'til they catch on that it's not a real cat.  I have full length
mirrors on my closet doors and my youngest kitty will look in them and then go
inside the closet looking for the kitty behind the glass.  The older they get,
tho, the less intrigued they are.

I've never had one that did more than a passing glance at himself, or the
reflection at all.  Maybe she just thought there was more than one *human*
in the room, since she's still very scared of any company in my house right
now.

Thanks for the input here.

Your story is so funny.  I have seen my cats do a double take before a
mirror at first but they sure learn very quickly to ignore it!

My cats are well used to mirrors since I have a big one in my
bathroom. Yet one of them always boxes against herself. She stands up
in front of the mirror and digs into the mirror. I have no idea why
she does that.
