What becomes of Monticore?

An amusing and light-hearted, yet completely serious article.
Worth a read.

Excerpt:
Let's try to see this from the tiger's point of view. Imagine, if you
will, being born a rare beast in a town that cares more about sustaining
the career of Sheena Easton than it does animal conservation. Imagine
having the instinct to run wild on some foreign continent with other
exotic creatures, but instead being forced to live like an entertaining
house cat in a Nevada desert with two plasticine Germans. Imagine being
a 600-pound genetic freak, wondering why you can't roam free when
there's a guy just down the Strip who's making a living impersonating
Joan Rivers and nobody tries to keep him indoors.

    A couple of things:

The tiger's name is Mon Coeur (My Heart), not Monticore,
Montecourt, or any of the other manglings the media has put out.

Mon Coeur is not going to be killed, placed, sold, or disposed
of.  Once the mandatory rabies quaratine is over, he will continue to
be taken care of by Siegfried and Roy and their staff of dedicated
keepers.

Mon Coeur did not attack Roy.  If Mon Coeur had wanted to kill
Roy, Roy would be dead.  Roy was grabbed in a scruff-of-the-neck hold,
dragged backstage, and released by the cat, who then went of his own
volition into his holding crate.  If it had been an attack, Roy would
have been grabbed by the front of the neck and Mon Coeur would have
bitten down with all the force those massive jaws are capable of.
Instead, he was put into a classic 'carry' hold, and Mon Coeur was
tiger-cub gentle with him.  It's a damn shame we humans are so
fragile.

Mon Coeur and the other tigers are bottle-fed by S&R every
night.  This is done to tighten the human-feline bond, and encourages
the cats to think of S&R as parental figures.

How do I know?  I know one of those dedicated keepers, who was
trained at Cat Tales in Washington.  She was there, she knows what
happened, and she knows the cat.

In this case the bond was a little too tight.   I hope he recovers.

Furthermore, the local (Las Vegas) news has reported that the tiger is now back
with the other tigers in the White Tiger sanctuary. I can see no reason he
would not remain there.

That's very interesting; I'm glad the tiger will be okay.

Me too, and I am praying for Roy's recovery.  He really is a
good guy who loves his cats.  They are his life, and I hope that he
recovers enough that he will be able to work with them again.

I read that online shortly after it happened.  I still haven't seen
any press get it right.

The media reported that they had to spray the cat with fire
extinguishers to get it to release Roy.  Was this an erroneous report?

The version I read that was attributed to Seigfried said that the tiger tried
to bring Roy into his cage. The noise of the fire extinguisher distracted him,
so he released Roy and then went to sit in his cage as he was trained to do.
This version made it sound as though the cat was not actually sprayed.

It was.  Mon Coeur dropped Roy, and a freaked-out stagehand
sprayed him with it *after* Roy was dropped and Mon Coeur was on his
way to his crate.

That sure puts a whole 'nother light on it, at least for me. I had read
that first version that made it sound like they had to spray him to get
him to release.
