Hi folks,
it´s been a while since I´ve posted here last.. sorry for that, I lurk
once in a while, but otherwise I have absolutely no time to catch up
with everything, my time schedule changed completely.
Most of you may remember me.. for those who don´t - I´m Marta, I have
2 kitties, Luna and Tabasco, both spayed/neutered, almost 2.5 years
old. This post is about Tabasco, here is the situation:
I just came back from a 3 day vacation. A friend promised to come here
during my absence to feed the cats and to scoop the litterboxes, which
she also did. When I came home, everything seemed to be okay. Then, as
I was cleaning the litterboxes today, Tabasco came into the box (he
often does this right after I cleaned the box) and peed. I looked into
the box and noticed that he only peed a few drops, which worried me a
bit. I decided to observe him during the day. During the next 3 hours
he went to pee like every 30 minutes with the same result, peeing only
a little bit - the last two clumps have been a bit bigger, but still
pretty small - a bit bigger than a big hazelnut (still in its shell)
maybe. He is not really straining while doing this, he simply seems to
have the need to pee often.
He doesn´t seem to be in pain or discomfort and he plays with his
sister. I made sure he has access to lots of water (which he drinks).
His breath smells normally.
Both he and his sister are fed a mixed diet - commercial food
(California Natural and Felidae) and raw diet (lately, it´s been
mostly commercial food, though). They get almost no dry food.
I know that this might be an UTI and I´m, of course, worried. Should I
take Tabasco to the vet immediately or is there something I can do?
What worries me most about going to the vet is the fact that Tabasco
hates going to vet, and that I am not sure what the procedure of
taking a sample of cat´s urine looks like. I´ve read that it is
possible by taking a sample DIRECTLY from the bladder (with a needle)
and this is something that I don´t want him to experience if it´s not
necessary. Last time I wanted to have his urine checked I simply
waited for him to pee, put a little bown under his "butt" while he was
peeing and took it to the vet who then sent it to a laboratory. But
this time, with so little urine, it could be difficult. What am I to
expect?
The vet lives/workes just down the street, I might just as well go
there and ask, but I thought I´d ask you as
well. Thank you in advance.

I would. My Julian had stones and died from toxicity in less than 24
hours.
I am now quite paranoid.

They squeeze his tummy if any comes out. If none comes out, they use a
catheter.
They will probably want to x-ray him for stones.

Hi Marta ,
I would go the vet as soon as possible .Dont worry about a sample .
Can you tell if there is blood in the urine? I use clumping litter and
it's hard to see the blood but when Kim gets cystitis I changed to
white litter pearls so the blood shows up. Kim doesnt show pain but
she acts skittish.
Stress brings on UTI or FLUTD and you're going a way might have
stressed him .

Take him to the vet. A UTI is especially worrisome when a male has it as
there is such a high risk of blockage. Taking a sample from the bladder
with a needle is no big deal and only takes a second. I've watched it
done many times and it is not traumatic for the cat. I hope you get him
well soon.

Thank you girls!
I just took him to the vet. The vet checked his temperature (okay) and
felt his bladder, which was empty. Apparently Tabasco has a mighty
bladder infection - she said that many cats have it around this time
of the year and that he probably found some cool spots where he likes
to lie down and got the infection in this way.
His urine is blood-free.
I´ve considered stress as a possible reason for it - we´ve been away
for 3 days. But, on the other hand, it wasn´t the first time that
we´ve been away and this would be the first time Tabasco shows such a
reaction.
Anyway - Tabasco got 2 shots of an antibiotic (ampicillin I believe)
and I have been given an homeopathic remedy as well - Cantharsis - in
form of drops, to give him 5 drops 3 times a day.I was happy to see
her giving me those drops, because I´ve been considering givinghim
this remedy myself, before I took him to the vet!
We will have to visit the vet again on friday, but at least I am
relieved now and I hope that Tabasco will soon be relieved, too!
ps. Megan, thank you so much for answering. How is Mr. Mistopheles
doing? I have posted once asking this very question but I think you
have missed it. I have even emailed you, but I had no luck.

The microsoft spams keep filling up my mailbox so I've had problems
getting regular mail, but the problem is better now than it was and it's
starting to trickle through. You can always email me through my website
if this one doesn't work.
Mister is doing GREAT! There were some bumps along the way, but he is
blissfully happy and has never bitten since being in his new home. I
actually have been meaning to post a detailed update since it's been a
year now. I'm just waiting for his mom to write it. She loves him to
pieces and was definitely the right choice (but I'll expand on that
later.) I'll email her again and remind her and hopefully will have
details to post very soon. :-)
