Hi
I have been posting lately on flea control and I e-mailed the local rescue
group and found out who there vet was and then i called them today and found
out that they will sell me advantage for my kitties without a prescription.
Now I was wondering the exact breakdown of how you can use the dog version
on cats as I could just buy the dog stuff and use it on all 6 of my pets and
than i could buy more next month since 6 packs for the dog are 61 for under
50 pounds and i think both of my dogs are under so i would use that for them
and than use the remaining ones for my cats.  2 of the cats are under 10
pound and 2 are over.  i'm not sure how much over i think around 15 pounds
total each though.  i know the kittens exact weight from like 2 weeks ago
and they are around 5 pounds each though.
thanks for the help

never mind
i found the website that has it listed so i will probably end up getting my
parents to take me there this afternoon to get the large size dog since i
can use it on all of my kitties and my 2 doggies and it will last a fair
amount of time so i can continually use it instead of only using it when
they get it.  now when i phoned the lady said nothing about having to be a
client of there's so i hope i don't have to.

Good luck to you on this.  I just did it yesterday.  The vet tech
configured it for my seven cats, and gave me one of the large dog
tubes and one of the medium; this left a little left over, but that's
okay.  Her instructions were .04 ml for cats under 9 lbs., and .08 ml
for cats over 9 lbs.  Be sure you get the syringes from there, too
(the small ones).  I ran into some trouble getting it to work straight
from the tubes, so I squeezed the Advantage into a small medicine cup,
and that worked just fine.  Don't forget that if you have any cats
that mutual groom each other, to separate them for 2-3 hours so they
don't lick it off each other.

Dosage ( minimum) 10 mg/ kg body weight topical solution (0.4 ml of the
10 % solution to cats under 9lbs body weight, 0.8 ml of the 10 %
solution to cats over 9lbs of body weight, 0.4 ml of the 10 % solution
to dogs 10lbs and under, 1,0 ml of the 10 % solution to dogs between 11
- 20lbs of body weight, 2,5ml of the 10 % solution to dogs 21-55lbs of
body weight, 4,0ml of the 10 % solution to dogs over 55lbs of body
weight).

Advantage comes in two sizes for cats
9 lbs or LESS 0.4 CC
10 lbs & Up 0.8 CC
One tube of large dog Advantage contains 4CC.

I think .4cc is too much for a small kitten. I prefer to weigh and use
.05cc/lb. which is slightly more than the minimum dosage. My ten-pound
cats get 1/5 cc.

That should read .5 or 1/2 cc.

Cats metabolize drugs more quickly, for one.

I have found (and used to counsel) that under "normal conditions"
Advantage will last 6 weeks on most animals.  If you have a heavy flea
problem, apply every 4 weeks and you will be safe.  Manufacters are
very conservative in their guidelines for use.

Hi
I have a few more questions on fleas and advantage.

After contacting a local resuce group and asking them if they knew of any
vets that would give advantage booking an appointment they said they didn't
know but they gave me the number of the vet they use.  I called the vet and
they said that they would give me the treatment but wanted me to buy each
different sizes.  I went there yesterday and the vet tech said I had to
bring in the pets and have them weighed and then they would give me the
treatments.  They said they wouldn't recommend me using the dog stuff on the
cats.  Well today I borrowed my grandma's dog to have her weighed since she
weighs the most out of all the dogs and I wanted the larger size of
advantage.

Anyway I treated all of my 4 cats and 2 dogs and I noticed that one of the
cats, the oldest in fact had scabs on her neck i think it was from
scratching and her skin was a little red in spots.  I think it may have been
that the fleas were bugging her or maybe she was allergic to them.

One of the questions I have is how does the advantage protect the full body
of the cat when you only apply it to the head?  Does it work because the
fleas like it near the head and they go there and get the stuff and die?

Another question I have is that in a previous post someone stated that I
should keep the cats away from each other for 2-3 hours so that they don't
groom each other.  Well I did that but I was wondering if I should wait
longer if it's not completely dry because the area where I applied the
advantage is kinda greasy looking like it's still kinda wet but It isn't
really wet.  I only noticed it really on my long hair cat but they short
hair I can't notice it that much.

Also I was wondering If there were any good safe products that you know of
that you can use on the furniture and clothing since The older cat that had
the worst case of fleas compared to all of the cats only stays in the
basement since she loves my brother who is in the basement and hates pretty
much everyone and everything so I think there may be fleas down there in the
furniture and on the cement flooring.  I still don't know where the fleas
came from since how could they get into the basement and not in the main
living area with all the other pets.

thanks

Because they want you to spend more money.  That's the only reason.

It's the *exact* same formula - just more per tube.  Seriously.  Our
Bayer rep used to give us big dog tubes to take home to use on our
cats, when he called on the vets where I worked.   It's the same
stuff.

Probably flea allergy.   The best initial course of treatment for a
cat with flea dermatitis is a soothing bath (NOT medicated) followed
by monthly treatment with Advantage.

I hope they had you apply it to the scruff of the neck, and not the
head...

>Does it work because the

Yes and No.  It spreads on the surface of the skin, to cover the whole
body.  It inhibits a neurotransmitter in the nervous system of the
fleas, and they die.

That's normal.   The carrier has a fatty-acid base, so appears greasy.
I have never kept my animals apart from each other.

If the infestation is really bad, you can clean the area really well
and then treat it with Frontline spray.  Remove the animals and keep
them out for 48 hours afterward, though.  If you use Advantage on the
animals monthly, you shouldn't have to do this, though - the fleas
will gradually die out.  They will bite humans, though, so beware.

They could have been carried in on your Brother or another human.  Not
unlikely, especially if anyone was around other animals with fleas.
All it takes is one preggo flea, and you will have thousands very
quickly.

hi
thanks for your reply.  i applied the advantage to the scruff of there neck
on the cats and then 3 or 4 spots on the dogs like it said to do.  i think
fleas may be fairly common in the area thouch there are a lot of roaming
pets around since i live in a townhouse complex so a lot of people who don't
seem to care about there pets.  One of the cats was acctually named sh.t
head by the people who owned him, I haven't seen him in a while though so
i'm worried.  there's a few stray's i give food to also but they only come
out late at night so i rarely see them, i just know there their since the
food is gone in the morning and a few times i've seen kitties eating like
they haven't eaten in months.
