Some of you might remember that I posted a little while ago asking if it was
normal for a cat to pee in a linen basket ...
Well we took him to the vet last night, as he peed in the basket again and
he just isnt himself at the moment. The vet told us that he might have an
infection so we had to take him in this morning so she can test his urine,
and if necessary sedate him and xray to make sure he has no stones.
I feel quite nervous for Sully, as I'd hate anything to happen to him. Will
be picking him up this afternoon.
Thankfully we have insurance on the cat, and that it looks like they will
pay for his treatment ... thankfully as the estimate (for the worst case
senario) was ?200!

Hi Becky ,
poor Sully , I hope he will be ok. I understand how you feel about
leaving him at the vet .
I dread it when one of my pets is at the vet and spend the time
pacing the room looking at the clock .
kim suffers from cystitis and she is just recovering from another
bout . I have some links to webpages about FLUTD on my web page under
V for veterinary ,
Let us know how it goes.

Thank you for your posts.
Just been on the phone to my boyfriend. He called the vet and Sully is alert
and enjoyed a tickle when the receptionist went to see how he was.
The vet was busy at the time, but from what was written down it sounds like
he has got an infection and has got to have 2 tablets a day. Dont know if he
was sedated or x-rayed.
Does anyone know with regard to cystitus, would insurance companies regard
this as a reoccuring condition? The vet said that we ought to find out, as
we know that cystitus can come back, and we would rather not pay out ?200 if
Sully has it again.
We're currently with the RSPCA for pet insurance (which it does state they
dont cover reoccuring conditions, though we're going to ring up and ask to
make sure), does anyone out there have any recommendations for insurance
companies who would cover reoccuring conditions.
Many thanks for your support.

Another update ...
Sully is home now, he's glad to be home.
Turns out Sully was actually constipated, and he was peeing in the linen
basket as a 'cry for help'. He's had an injection which will last 2 days,
has a weeks worth of antibiotics and has a cat laxative, bless!
Am now wondering if the insurance will pay out for constipation, as the bill
came to ?186.00, which we've had to pay up front.
Any suggestions ... ?
Many thanks

Rebecca,
I'm a little confused. If it's a urinary tract infection or if it's
constipation and it will be medically treated it seems to me to be a lot of
money. I am writing from New York and when you write 200 with that kind of
an L in front of it is that Great Britain pounds? That would be almost $300
in my money.
My vet recently did a urinalyses on my Sapphire who had a urinary tract
infection and gave her medicine and it only cost about $50. (about 35 GBPs).
If the condition is recurring would he continue doing x-rays? Wouldn't he
just prescribe medication after taking and testing a urine sample?
Maybe other vets in your area are more reasonable.

I also wondered about this. The price quoted seems excessive unless tests
were taken that the OP did not mention. I would certainly check into
this -- and look at other veterinary practices, if necessary.

Hi,
Sully did have to have a lot of things done, I guess it does depend on what
each vet charges for items such as x-rays etc, but we chose that vet as it
is a 5/10 minute drive from ours to the vet, and Sully doesnt like being in
his basket, so we might be paying more than some others, but we feel that
his comfort is more important.
We had to pay for the consultation, urine tests (which was sent to the lab),
sedation/reversal, x-ray, antibiotics, cat laxative and a couple of others
what I cant think of at the moment.
The 2 most expensive items were the x-ray and sedation (which came to around
?100 for just those 2). It does seem expensive I know, but I know from my
own experience of when I had my wisdom teeth out, and was sedated, half the
bill was just for the sedation, so we knew it'd cost a bit.
Anyway, Sully seems to be more 'himself' now which is nice to see. He loves
the catalax (love the name of that!), hopefully it'll do its job and start
motions!

Hi,
Do you know why Sully needed to be sedated? This doesn't sound like
somethng that would require sedation. Anyway, I'm glad you're taking good
care of Sully and I hope your insurance took care of some (or all) of your
bill.

Hi MarL,
We think Sully had to be sedated, as the vet wanted to take a fresh urine
sample, which meant squeeing his bladder, and I dont think Sully would had
appreciated the vet doing that whilst fully awake, also it would had made
taking the x-ray a lot easier.
As for the insurance, we should be getting the claim form today, so will
fill that in and then take to the vet, for them to fill out their bit, and
then hope that they will pay out.
We know we wont get the full bill price back, but hopefully will get at
least all the medical items which should be covered.

How about taking Sully's urine sample yourself. I only worry that if you
make big claims on some insurance policies (homeowners, for example), well
the next thing is your rate goes up or you get dropped.
Put some saran wrap or plastic from the dry cleaners across his litter pan.
When he makes, take it up with a medicine dropper. You may have one left
over from the antibiotic or you could buy one in the drugstore. A dropper
full should be enough and you can carry it in a plastic cup.
These infections are serious in a male cat and must be treated. I notice
with my girl cats a urine sample is enough and the vet prescribes without
even seeing the cat. If the infection recurs or doesn't clear up then he
will run further tests. Only one of my cats had the recurring problem and
then we went to x-rays and the whole works. The others may get this problem
once every 2 or 3 years and treatment seems to be simple and inexpensive.

Hi Rebecca,
Thats sounds about right to me , but I 'm surprised that the vet
ordered all these tests if this is the cat's first "outbreak" .
Sometimes cats have cystits and it never recurs.
Kim, my cat gets cystitis about once or twice a year . There are some
links to cystitis websites on my webpage below (on page 6)
