Moe & Rudy, brothers 9 months old & neutered, indoor cats
Moe will play with anything, Rudy who is over weight just watches when
Moe plays, have even tried puttting Moe in the bdrm to get Rudy to play
doesn't make a difference...they are feed cat food for indoor cats
we told the SPCA we wanted to cats that got along well and could get
along with kids, I have 6 year old grandson but he;s grown up w/cats,
he Moe can play all day...SpCA said these brothers loved each other,
couldn't be seperated, that they cuddled and groomed each other all
time....BULL, the only they together is wrestle and even fight to the
point of leaving marks on each other
ok 3 questions
how to get Rudy to play?
how much to feed them? they eat all day long and they're bowl is fulled
when empty 2-3 times a day
how to get them more affectionate with us people, seem to have taken to
hubby but not me, except for when I'm in the tub and they want to join
me
Thanks all

What was the rational behind putting Moe in the bedroom? Not clear.

Your overweight cat should not be free-fed. And canned food makes for
friskier cats in my opinion. How much to feed is another issue. Google
this group, there have been lots of discussions on it. Many people feed a can
in the morning then a can 12 hours later. How big a can? Your best bet is to
ask your vet.

What they did at the SPCA might be what they will do when they have been
at your house longer, you know? They might not be totally relaxed yet.

What toys have you tried? Feathers on a string are usually
good, and flash lights or laser pointers (as long as nobody
points them into the cats eyes as that can hurt them). Lots
of cats like catnip toys. Do you have good tall or flat
scratchers for them? Some can be rubbed with catnip and make
the cats very playful.

Lynn how long have you had them? It takes some time for cats to
get comforatble where they are. Do you like these cats?

It seems very odd to me that a 9 month old kitten wouldn't want to play.
All of mine were little terrors at that age, even the shy one was very
active -- he wouldn't play with me, but he did romp around on his own and
with the other cats. Possibly your kitten just hasn't adjusted to a new
environment but then I also wouldn't expect it to be eating so much in
that case. I would not let the situation go on for very long before
getting Rudy to a vet to look for some physical cause for not wanting to
move around.

You'll need to try different things.
Getting down on the floor with both of them and engaging both of them
with some toy may work. You might have to entice Rudy to join in with a
treat once in a while... food is a great motivator for cats.
I know... sounds like that may defeat the purpose of weight lose,
however 3 - 4 treats during a play session isn't going to make much
difference.

Feed 2x/day. Leave the bowl on the floor for 20 minutes, then remove it.

The hubby too? Must be a big tub! :)

lets see if I can cover everything, yes we love Moe & Rudy
I called the SPCA and they recommended Feliway because at night they
get very wild & destructive....Rick couldn't find Moe and he was in the
cupboard with the glasses, many glasses broke luckliy no hurt Moe or
Rick
I have catnip, made a box thingie they climb in and out of, 2
straching posts one super tall, the other just a bit shorter but has
cubby holes in it, use the feathers on a string, catnip toys, balls,
mice (not real ones) : ) toy mouse the squeaks, and a panic
mouse....they bite through anything that's on a string
Rick is at home more, he's mostlty housebound due to cancer, they will
sit on his lap but only very briefly...I can pick them up for a quick
cuddle and make sure I do that everyday several times
I put Moe in the bdrm to try to get Rudy to play since Moe takes over
on the toys and everything else, and he's the smaller of the two!
I grew up w dogs and still do love them but as an adult my ex got me
into cats and I've had several since, though never have I had 2 at the
same time
SPCA says they will take them back and we could get others, both of us
would hate to do that we love our babies
I have gotten a spray thats safe for animals but just reples (sp) them,
they're tearinng posters off the walls, try to tear the rubber bathtub
mat,.I do put it up at night... try to tear up books...even get on top
of fridge to knock down ceral box and tear open the box, they tore down
the curtians last night
everynight I place pie tins, pot lids, cookie sheets and cover all the
kitcken counters and the stove
Q....my friend has a very large dog carrier, I know w/dogs they often
use them as a comfort thing....I would never be mean to an animal
...but would that maybe clam them down?
Right now we confine one of the cats to the spare bdrm at night, w/food
and toys and kitty litter....is that mean? maybe just put both of
them in there? and "baby proof it"
just heard a bang Moe was up on the counter, I have to make sure every
space is covered....Moe found a gap....heard of using fly paper but
that seems rather cruel
you all are so nice, thoughtful and helpful .... I can't thank you
enough for your responses
Lynn
PS, I even leave the radio on at night and have several night lights on
and keep window spaces open for them
