Declawing saved my cat's life, giving him 7 more years and saving the furniture as well.

My mother died in 1997.  "Bunch" was 7 years old at the time.  He had
torn up most of the upholstered furniture at mom's and had some
wellness issues as well.  It was Mom's wish that someone take Bunch so
he could live a full life.

None of my other siblings (4 sorry selfish bitch sisters) wanted to
take him on because of his health and clawing so I did the right thing
and took Bunch.  The reason I say they are sorry selfish bitch sisters
is that they got as much money from Mom's estate as I did and they
didn't pony up any of the money to help pay for Bunch's medical
problems.  But they were sorry selfish bitches before the money issue
came up anyway.

I had to get Bunch declawed though so he would not tear up Kathy's and
my furniture.  I know, that is kind of late in life to get a cat
declawed, but it was the only way that Bunch was going to survive.  It
was rough on him for about 1 week - the sensitive padded paws - but he
came through it like the champion he was to my mother.  And he actually
became an even more loving pet because Mom had not been able to care
for him in her declining years as well as I know she would have liked.
He even started purring a lot when he would jump up on the bed at night
to join Kathy and me.

Bunch lived with us for 7 years and gave us much joy.  He had to have a
depo shot each month for his skin condition and he kind of fell off at
the end due to depo-induced diabetes that was helped by putting him on
a diabetes diet.  He fell off from 12 1/2 pounds to 8 1/2 and the vet
told us it was time for us to have him put to sleep.  He knew how much
Bunch meant to the two of us (and me particularly due to what Mom had
done for me through life and the money she had left me and the sorry
bitches) but it was time for Bunch to join Mom in heaven.

To make it easy to remember the date we had him put to sleep on was
9/11/04.  That way the anniversary of his death will be easily
remembered - a tribute to the love and comfort that Bunch gave us and
we gave him.

We still love you Bunch, and miss you a bunch!

If there is anyone out there who is in a similar situation and is torn
between having a cat declawed or having it put to sleep simply due to a
clawing habit do the right thing.  Have the cat declawed so it can live
and enjoy life instead!  You will never regret it.

Actually, that would be pointless.  If declawers aren't smart enough to
teach their cats where to scratch, they certainly don't have the
intelligence to understand the heinousness of the mayhem.

Must be humiliating having a cat that's smarter than they are.
Barb - 09 Sep 2005 20:50 GMT
What they did to this cat is kind of like saying, "your fingers or your
life".  Given a choice I guess we'd all rather have the tops of our fingers
cut off than be killed.  Still, we would never get over that.

That's part of the inhumanity of the procedure- the cat doesn't get the
choice.

guess we'd all rather have the tops of our fingers
> cut off than be killed.

Some years ago, Landsberg, a Canadian behaviorist, conducted a survey of
owners of declawed cat to find out how many owners would actually have
killed their cats if the cats couldn't be declawed.  98% said they would
have still kept their cats if they couldn't be declawed.

So, the 'death or declaw' ultimatum is nothing more than cheap emotional
blackmail that lazy,
selfish, inconsiderate owners use to assuage their conscience and mask their
ineptness in teaching their cats where to scratch.

Neither do the cats.

Well, Phil..... Kathy and I must be in that 2%.  The furniture we have
is very valuable.  It has been accumulated over the years.  We live in
a 3,500 sq. ft. house!

There are some antique sofas, for instance.  We have paid to have them
cleaned and even had them reworked over the years.  Very valuable sofas
with very valuable and costly fabric.  And gotta watch that wood
now........once it's scratched it isn't worth anything.

Some biddy who replied here in another post seemed to be trying to say
that cats can be taught not to claw in no time.  It is not the case!  I
also resent the insinuation of that bitch that my Mom in some way did
not take care of the cat while she had him.  She rescued Bunch as a
kitten when he was in the middle of the road.  I guess you and the
others think that she should have let nature take its course - if a car
hit the kitten that would be ok and part of (in your deviated minds)
God's plan.  And even now, that my Mom, God and I saw to it that Bunch
lived to be 14 instead of dying in the middle of that road, you guys
still try to make out that the cat was mistreated by Mom causing
auto-immune side effects and that I having had Bunch declawed was in
some way evil.  You people living on the side of a mountain in West
Virginia or something?

It is also wrong for you and the others to equate the loss of cat's
claws to a human being losing their fingers.  Like I told someone else
in a response here the analogy they are trying to make is fallacious
because they AREN'T equivalent and therefore the analogy they are
trying to make is a false analogy.

You people aren't very smart, are you?

You were wrong then and you're wrong now.  The analogy is correct.  You're
not very bright, are you? (rhetorical question).  I'll repost my reply to
your previous ignorant statement because you'll probably need to read it a
few times to understand it:

"The claw is part of the last bone (distal phalanx) in the cat's toe. The
claw arises from the unguicular crest and unguicular process in the distal
phalanx.   Most of the germinal cells that produce the claw are situated in
the dorsal aspect of the ungual crest. This region must be removed
completely, or regrowth of a vestigial claw and abcessation results.  IOW,
the last bone of the cat's toe must be amputated at the joint."

I thought about your "Cats don't have a choice" regarding your fingers or
your life and you are right.  This declawing is more like- "You lucky duck,
I'm going to chop off the ends of your fingers instead of killing you."

My Sapphire had been a declawed kitten when I found her in the street.  Her
whole life she pretended each day to sharpen her claws.  The other cats
could claw their way to the top of the cat tree and Sapphire always had to
go up the inside using the steps.  I always wished I could give her back her
claws.

Hodge does the same thing, and he kneads quite a bit, too. It's really
sad to see since there's nothing there, and his feet look misshapen when
he stretches them out or as he's walking. (To clarify: Same thing as you
-- he was declawed by a previous owner, not sure if it was the same one
who abandoned him.) He does have his back claws, though, which he keeps
razor sharp with his teeth. Heh.

Hi Barb,

I know- doncha hate when people have that asinine attitude?  As if the cat
owes them something for adopting her.  They feel they have the right to do
anything they want to the cat because they saved her life. Kinda like
indentured or penal servitude.

> My Sapphire had been a declawed kitten when I found her in the street.  Her

I have two cats that were declawed by their previous owners, so, I know
exactly what you're talking about.  They go through the scratching motion
but they don't derive the same pleasure as clawed cats.  I can feel the
muscles in their shoulders and back don't tighten nearly as much as my
clawed cats' muscles do when they scratch.

One of the saddest things I've seen was one of the declawed cats jumping
from
the sofa to a cat tree and falling because she couldn't grip the tree with
her claws.  The look on her face was one of confusion and bewilderment- she
didn't seem to understand why she fell.  Truly heart-wrenching.

You're also right about how declawed cats climb.  Cats love to climb
vertically- they exercise all the muscles of their paws, forelimbs and back.
Declawed cats can't- they have to climb in steps.

They say one picture is worth a 1000 words - any one says it all:

Just a note: you are not the only people who post here who value your
furniture. While it is not my style to post as you have posted above,
you will just have to trust me on that. Everyone has family heirlooms
and some stuff they don't want to see ruined. The difference is, any
living thing, especially one that trusts and depends on me is always
going to be more important than any furniture. That said, the simplest
alternative to mutilation by declawing is to a) trim your cats' claws
about every four weeks and b) give them things they like to scratch
better than your furniture. It is simple, and takes little effort, and
most certainly costs less than declawing. There is never any need
to declaw. It is done for expediency only, and is indeed very
cruel.
chas - 10 Sep 2005 19:27 GMT
Why don't you do the decent thing and find the cat a loving home where it
will mean more to the owner than the furniture does?

When the subject of cat declawing comes up some of these people only can see it one way,
that cats are better off dead then declawed.  They do not even try to see the other side
of it.  Before I go further let me say that I would not declaw mine of which I have 4
which is 1 above what the law says I can have.

When I found two more kittens which were both about 3 months old I tryed to find a home
for them but my mother-in-law already had 10 cats which were all strays, my neice already
had taken 2 for me and her neighbor took one plus as I said I had 4.  I ran an ad in the
paper for a week with no takers.  Every day there is usually up to a dozen ads for cats /
kittens in the "Free for Free" section.  The local shelter would take them but only keep
them for 3 days because they were overloaded with cats / kittens.  Done of my other
relatives would take them.

That left my ex and she said she would take them if they were declawed.  Well it was
declaw or turn them back loose to fend for themselves and I choose declaw and my ex took
them and they are so spoiled that they are worse them mine as far as spoiled and they are
more lovable then any of the 4 of mine.  One of them is a Flame Pointe and the other is a
Tabby.

I know someone is still going to say I was wrong for declawing them but they are loved,
spoiled and have a good home now so I think I made the right decision so you anti
declawing fanatic can go take a flying leap.

You can see all mine and my ex's babies at:

Yes, you were wrong, but I think you already know that.  Giving in to
your ex's emotional blackmail was wrong.  Mutilating these poor animals
so they could have a home was wrong.  What if declawing was illegal
where you live so you couldn't have them declawed?  What would you or
your ex have done then?  I highly recommend educating your ex on
exactly what declawing is.  Maybe she's not aware that not only is the
claw removed, but the last digit of each toe is also amputated.  Your
argument that it's okay they were declawed because they are loved and
spoiled is ridiculous.  Think about it - if someone beat their kid but
yet said they still loved them, don't you think that's ridiculous?

I treat people who mistreat animals like a.sholes.  Those are usually the
people who whine and complain the most about my manners.  So you must be in
that group and I probably criticized or ridiculed you harshly at one time or
another.  Actually,
I'm fairly certain I did- you're just using a different name because you're

Nope.  Your opinion has no value because you're no one of any significance-
a nobody- a nothing.  Some people's opinions are important to me- you're
just not one of them.

I must have really flame broiled you to well done at one time or another for

It's okay, gawjuss. :) Louise is stalking him. She fell in love
with the magnificent Phil, only to find that he was only
interested in her for her cats. A bitter pill to swallow.
Now she hunts him by day and walks the floors at night.
Once you've had a little taste of Phil's fantastic
expertise re cats, you never forget it. And I am not
kidding. Sure, plenty of guys are good for a quick twinkie
tingle. Lots of guys can deliver the cold cuts with or
without mayo (if you know what I mean.) But Phil is the guy
you go to when your pussy's, feverish, hungry, yelling her
head off; swollen, enflamed, engorged. Or maybe she just
has a bit of constipation. Phil is every cat woman's dream.

Poor Louise. No wonder she's bitter.

Yeah, Barb, you wouldn't be able to type out stupid responses like you
just did.  And that would be a blessing to many, many people.

What you are trying to make into a analogy, that their nails are

You obviously don't know much about feline anatomy.  The analogy is exactly
correct.

The claw is part of the last bone (distal phalanx) in the cat's toe. The
claw arises from the unguicular crest and unguicular process in the distal
phalanx.   Most of the germinal cells that produce the claw are situated in
the dorsal aspect of the ungual crest. This region must be removed
completely, or regrowth of a vestigial claw and abcessation results.  IOW,
the last bone of the cat's toe must be amputated at the joint.

Is it Bigjoe?  Or BigJosephine?  The tone and presentation of it seems
to be that at hands of a woman rather that that of a man.

You also made grammatical error.  An indication that "all the lights in
the house" might not be on.  But we'll give it to you though "Bigjoe"
because it is apparent from the way you write and what you have to say
that you are pretty dim.

Bunch is smiling down from heaven on us now.  He is happy he had 14
years of life down here with my Mom, me and Kathy.  Bunch is thankful
that my mother rescued him from the middle of the road as a kitten.
Bunch now waits for us patiently in heaven until Kathy and I fulfill
our mortal lives.  And, despite your greatest wishes, it doesn't look
like Kathy and I am going to join him anytime soon.  But there is
hardly a day that passes that we don't think of "da Bunch".

Hope that clarifies everything for you now.  Come on back if you need

Probably.  But trolls are great for facilitating the disclosure of a lot of
information about the heinousness of declawing.  Its kinda fun watching them
defeat their own purpose while saving some cats from the inhumane
amputations at the same time.

If just one cat is sparred the horrible procedure as a result of a declawing
flamewar- it would be well worth it.

Thank god it's illegal here in England, I can't believe people would

How do the "death or declaw" subscribers explain the fact that our British
friends and millions of other people around the world in countries where
declawing isn't performed, unless its a medical emergency, manage to live in
harmony with their fully clawed cats?  Or do they think you live in shredded
homes covered with festering scratch wounds???

This is one of the reasons why the declaw or death argument is ridiculous
bordering on asinine.
meee - 12 Sep 2005 01:51 GMT
Ken and Kathy, I am glad you took the cat, instead of turfing her out on the
street, but nothing you do or say can convince anyone that declawing is
recognized all over the world as inhumane and unfair to the animal. It is
widely proved and accepted by vets, not ordinary joes like ourselves, that
declawing greatly reduces the animal's quality of life. And as declawing is
widely accepted by vets, animal lovers, and animal educators, surely you
must have known that to post a messgae about declawing, and purporting to
love your cat, in a cat webisite full of cat activists, would start a flame
war? Anybody smell troll?

It really doesn't matter.  Either way you're serving my purpose.

We have correctly reported how
>declawing added 7 years to the life of Ken's mother's cat.

Because otherwise *you* would have killed the cat. You didn't anything.  The
cat would live just as long- if not longer with someone who has the
intelligence and common sense to teach the cat where to scratch.  You
declawed the cat to compensate for your ineptness and stupidity and not only
betrayed the cat's trust, but "Ken's" mother's trust.

You seem to
>be a dangerous person given your irrationality and delusions.

You're dangerous to animals given your level of stupidity and ineptness.

You know, Kathy, there are parts of the world where girls have their
clitoris removed at a young age.  It suits the convenience of their
owners.  Does that make it right?
