Blue-eyed cats = poor vision?

I can't recall where I heard this, but I'm wondering if it's an urban
myth.

Our new adoptee, Chloe, has blue eyes, and seems to have poor vision.
She can see well enough to get around, but doesn't track things very
well, and sometimes misjudges distance.

Do blue-eyed cats have poor vision?

I have the same kind of issue with my blue-eyed cat too.  His eyes wiggle
all of the time and he always wants us to tap on the counter where his
food is...I would be very interested to hear any posts on this topic.....

I have never heard this (which doesn't mean it can't be true).  However, I
wonder if you are confusing this with hearing.  White cats with blue eyes
often are deaf.  Incidentally, I had a cat with the most spectacular blue
eyes -- she was a little angel and had no defects at all.

I've never heard it linked to blindness either. Deafness can
definitely be linked to the white-spotting gene in cats. It is not
however linked to the siamese gene that causes blue eyes, so even a
pure white cat with blue eyes ( called a foreign white} will not be
deaf if it inherited its blue eyes from the siamese gene. Could yours
have been part Siamese?

We had a blue-eyed white cat, Kimba.  Not deaf, very siamese.

Yes, definitely.  I always thought she looked a lot like a Balinese or a
long-haired Siamese.  She was white/cream color with flame points and was
one of the sweetest, gentlest cats I have ever seen.  You can see a picture
of her here.

She was 15 years old at the time the picture was taken and died at the age
of 16, after a 3-year bout with CRF and IBD.

She looks like she was a real sweety- some cats just have that look.  I'm
sorry you lost her.

Here's my blue-eyed beauty:

I'm still trying to figure out the mix.  Sorta Turkish Angora-ish.

Yes, I agree. She looks Turkish Angora to me, too!! She is gorgeous, also.

Thanks.  The way she prances around, seems like she knows it. LOL!

Wow she's beautiful, I had a Turkish Van (we named him Vanilla, long
before we knew he was a Van) until 3 years ago when he died of CRF.  I
think I have a pic scanned of him if you'd like to see him (I'd have to
e-mail it).  He was an exceptionally beautiful cat but was very shy,
unless he wanted food.  We found him locked in a cupboard when a friend
was moving into a new apartment, the momma cat and other kittens were
there as well, but unfortunately were dead by the time we found them.
Some a.shole owners decided to move without them and locked them away.
We bottle fed him as he was no more than two weeks old.  Blue eyed and
very alert, but I was convinced he was a little cross-eyed.

Thanks- but don't say it too loud- she's already a Primadonna- If she hears
it too often she'll start charging me for the privilege of feeding and
grooming her. LOL!

Absolutely! I'd love to see him.

That's horrible. I probably would have tracked them down and prosecuted them
for animal abuse.  I have no tolerance for people like that.  I would love
to tell you a few stories about Bronx street justice for animal abusers that
slip through the law, but I can't --for another few years.

Suggie was returned three times for behavioral problems- so I was in it for
the duration.  Her kittens were taken away too soon and she was neutered and
declawed at the same time- at about 8 months.

I think she was abused because of her behavioral problems which only made
them worse. For the first
few months she was a living nightmare- major fear aggression.  It took
almost a year of groveling and major patience before she finally came
around.  Took a long time for her to feel safe and secure and trust me.  Now
she's a bundle of love who doesn't tolerate being ignored for a minute when
she wants attention- which is almost always.  She gets along with my other
cats- and close with only one- but prefers to be alone most of the time.

Here's a good picture of her eyes- ain't she beautiful?
