My vet wants me to inject my 13-year-old cat with 75-100 cc of Lactated
Ringers 2-3 times a week to prolong her life. She has elevated renal
numbers and has been on Hills k/d diet for about 1-1/2 years.
The vet's assistant showed me how to give her the injection. The cat
took it ok in the vet's office. A few days later, when I did it, the
cat showed she did not like it from the start. When about half
finished she put up such a fight I had to pull the needle out.
The cat has been a bit aloof since (almost a week now). She seems
afraid of me and sometimes runs under the bed when I come into my
bedroom. I kind of wanted to give it another go, but I am not sure
this is worth it. I'd like to prolong her life, but it's not doing
much good if it ruins her sweet temperament. Anyone have any thoughts
on this?

Maybe give her a favorite treat while you set up and do the injection- some
chicken or something? A lot of sweet talk and stuff, too.

Of course I don't look busy,
I did it right the first time.

If the cat is going to be continually distressed and miserable, you might
like to consider whether this counts as an acceptable quality of life.
13 is a good age for a cat. It's admirable that you are willing to do so
much to help her. Undoubtedly she has had a good life with you. She deserves
a fear free end too, whenever that time may be. Are you brave enough to say
enough is enough?
It's a 'rock and a hard place' question I'm afraid.
My thoughts are with you.

Thanks for your thoughts. I certainly don't want to extend Marble's
life only to ruin her final time here. She has had a great life with
lots of love. I'd like to extend that, but if I can't do the
injections, she'll still be around for some time, and I intend to savor
the moments.

I think Kami is strting to figure out that she feels better when she
gets it. I'm not sure that a cat can correlate something like that
with so many hours between fluids and feeling good, but she's less and
less feisty about it. Just make sure you didn't hit bone or muscle,
and warm the fluids first. It's more comfortable that way.

What is Kami's situation? Renal problems?

She has CRF. We're in our 4th year with it and she's doing darn well.

Yeah, I had to give her some last night and either she's beginning
to realize she feels better afterward or I'm getting better at
administering it (one time I got the needle in crooked and she was
lopsided and quite annoyed).
I have a "three barf rule" for fluids at this point. If she throws
up three days in a row she gets fluids. I do that because she's one
of those bulemic cats who will purge dry food she ate just before I
got home so she has room for canned food, or she eats to fast and
needs to burp (she *does* burp) and the burp goes terribly wrong.
LOL! It's disgusting.

Are you using a syringe or drip from a bag? Different methods require
different techniques.
Here's a website that gives detailed instructions:
http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/ClientED/cat_fluids.htm
If the link doesn't work for you, let me know. I'll send you the file in
pdf.
