My kitty, Hobbes, has always been a talker. But lately, it's constant!
He follows me around constantly and meows all the time. He's a main
coon-type cat...large and fuzzy and so lovable. He has a repertoire of
sounds ranging from yowling when he roams around the house (occurs in
the early evening) and half-meows, trills and full meows. I thought
this was very cute at first, but now that his companion has been gone
for about two months now, he's gotten so much worse. They were
together all their lives and now he's by himself.
He sticks to me like glue except when he's sleeping. I hate to say
that it's bugging me but it is. I love him so much, don't get me
wrong. I cuddle him and pet him and talk to him constantly. But it's
never enough. He's extremely needy. He always has been, but it's now
increased ten-fold. Does anyone have experience with kitty grief? I'm
beginning to think his grieving is the cause of his excessive
vocalization.
Hi, my cat is the same exactly!! I have heard cats do this who have
hypertension. However my cat doesn't. He's always been vocal, very
much!! But since his brother died he also wont let me out of his site.
I cuddle him as much as possible. When he screams I just reassure him
I'm there. And try to wean him off me. I try to ignore him a little
when I know he just wants too much attention. You don't want to make
him feel abandoned but just like a baby you can't let him always get
his way. Once he finds that screaming works he'll do it all the time.
Just give him space, pretend you're not interested and don't babyhim,
Just comfort him when necessary.
Good luck,
JQ

Hi JQ - I'm so glad there's someone else out there who understands! I
think I'll try not to baby him too much. I'm definitely guilty of
that! It's hard to resist. It's getting dangerous, though, because
he's getting under my feet so much I almost fell down the stairs.
Thanks for the advice!

And one thing I also noticed - if I ever say my deceased cat's name
Simba really gets disturbed. Very confused and starts howling again.
Something to consider. They definately have feelings!! Take care

Oh my gosh, I noticed that too! I once called Emma's name out loud
and Hobbes was looking everywhere for her. There's a small stuffed
raccoon laying in a basket here in the tv room. Emma used to carry it
around the house and sleep with it. Hobbes goes over there and licks
the toy. Maybe I should get rid of it. So sad. BTW, I love the name
Simba. Very cute.

Hey JQ - After one day of not babying my kitty, he's vocalizing less.
I think my talking to him constantly added fuel to the fire. Thank you
so much for the advice!

Good to hear it. They're like our little babies eh - we gotta listen to
their signs and take care of them.
Glad I could help a little.
Take Care, JQ
HOWEDY LauraM,
> My kitty, Hobbes, has always been a talker.
No, your kitty Hobbes has always been HYPERACTIVE and INSECURE.
> But lately, it's constant!
He's got OCD just like your other DEAD kat.
> He follows me around constantly and meows all the time.
He's GRIEVING your other DEAD KAT, LauraM.
> He's a main coon-type cat...large and fuzzy and so lovable.
> He has a repertoire of sounds ranging from yowling when he

> meows, trills and full meows. I thought this was very cute at

He's getting worse because you VARIABLY REINFORCE
his OCD behaviors by alternately ignoring scolding
and then physically comforting him.
> They were together all their lives and now he's by himself.
He NEEDS you to TALK TO HIM about his DEAD PAL.
> He sticks to me like glue except when he's sleeping.
BECAUSE HE'S INSECURE because you coddle him
when YOU FEEL LIKE IT and PUNISH and SCOLD him
when you don't want to be BOTHERED by him.
> I hate to say that it's bugging me but it is.
That your kats have had VERY LONG CASE HISTORIES of
OCD insecurity behavior problems and STRESS INDUCED
AUTO-IMMUNE DIS-EASES which DID NOT BOTHER YOU till
they DROPPED DEAD or WENT INSANE from STRESS is remarkable.
> I love him so much, don't get me wrong.
Naaah, The Amazing Pussy Wizard NEVER gets things
WRONG because HE RELIES on your own POSTED CASE
HISTORY to dermine the causes of your kat's obsessive
compulsive DIS-EASES.
> I cuddle him and pet him
THAT REINFORCES HIS INSECURITY.
> and talk to him constantly.
He needs you to PRAISE HIM and TALK ABOUT
his DEAD PAL. The advice you got from the
other poster who's GOT THE SAME PROBLEM
to IGNORE your kat will make his behaviors
CHANGE to other, seemingly non related
anxiety relief mechanisms or TRAINsfer
behaviors.
> But it's never enough.
Of curse not, because you variably reinforce
his INSECURITY by alternately pattin praising
scolding and ignoring him for being AFRAID.
> He's extremely needy.
INDEEDY. That's what you LOVE about him.
> He always has been, but it's now increased ten-fold.
Because you MISHANDLE him.
> Does anyone have experience with kitty grief?
Yeah, it's the same as people FEEL.
> I'm beginning to think his grieving is the
> cause of his excessive vocalization.
So you'll IGNORE HIS GRIEVING like your "SUCCESSFUL"
friend in this thread does for his OCD kat and he'll
SELF MUTILATE like your other DEAD KAT:
Subject: Kitty Prozac
Hi Alison - Thanks for all that valuable info! I'm
not absolutely sure she does not have what you describe,
however, he did a whole blood panel on her and said
everything came out clear. He's a really good vet,
but I'll bring this up next week when I take her
(Emma) in for her bath.
When this whole thing started at the end of March,
she was sneezing and scratching constantly. In the
last month she's only scratched -- no sneezing.
Plus, when I got married and moved into my husband's house,
she didn't like it. The other cat adjusted in about 3 days
unbelievably. Emma did not like the change and it took about
4-5 months before she sort of started acting normally. It's
been about 16 months now and she's better but she's definitely
still not like she was at my house.
I think she's really sensitive and this scratching is
something she's doing out of emotional distress.
THanks again for the info.

Subject: Kitty Prozac
My vet just prescribed prozac (or something like it)
for my kitty. My kitty is scratching herself bald.
It started, I believe, with allergies this season in
March and the vet gave her a cortizone injection at
that time. Every 3-4 weeks she'd need another injection
to control her scratching herself silly.
I thought it was over until yesterday when I noticed
bald spots on top of her head, and a huge one on her
neck.
The vet suggested this prozac to hopefully help her get
over this obsessive compulsive disorder of scratching.
I've changed her food in the last three months, brush
her, and give her vitamins that have primrose oil.
Has anyone heard of prozac for kitties???
Laura M.
Tnx to everyone who prayed for my kitty. Turns out
she has IBD. And a raging case of it. They took a
biopsy of the intestine and liver.
The vet is consulting a specialist for drugs
considering she wasn't responding to the predisone.
Can you tell me what palliative care is??

I just found out that my kitty isn't coming home either.
I'm sitting here crying my eyes out. The vet called this
morning after his consultation with the oncologist regarding
medical treatment.
Evidentally the biopsy showed so many things wrong.
They did a biopsy of multiple organs. I can't go into
it all right now because I'm upset but she had lymphoma
too. I loved her so much. The vet and I did all we could.
She used to have this stuffed raccoon she carried around
the house (I posted awhile ago about how cute it was) and
now my other cat is licking it.
He knows she's gone. And she's not
coming home. Oh god, I'm so upset.

Okay, okay. I got it. I must be getting old.
I remember wondering why my parents didn't get
things I found funny. It happens people.
We all turn into our parents. YIKES!

FYI I never said I scold my cat or ignore him, I just don't beleive in
babying too much eedy behaviour it makes my cat more dependent. When
he's afraid I definately make sure to comfort him but not overly.

What a weirdo this wizard guy! To analyze our history to such extent
regarding old posts. Yes he is the one who needs PROZAC!
