This article says that animal welfare groups -- previously barred from
entering most flood-affected areas -- have finally reached areas to set up
shelters, rescue endangered pets, and move them to safety.
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2005-09-03-katrinapetrescues_x.htm

The article also has links to a number of groups where we can make donations
for rescue.

I would like to repeat the information that I provided in an earlier
message --
You can find more info and ways to donate needed items or money
here:

http://www.uan.org

Noah's Wish is run by Terri Crisp, who wrote Out Of Harm's Way, the story of
how emergency animal rescue services began.  Definitely worth reading:

I am not ignoring the incredible needs of people affected by this disaster,
although I haven't been posting about it to this newsgroup.  I made my own
monetary donation through the American Red Cross Relief Fund.  In fact, I
received a call from our church just as I started typing this.  We have a
number of evacuees here and several shelters.  They asked us to take any
bedding, pillows, etc. that we could spare *right now* because a new group
will arrive this evening.  So, I'm on my way to gather some items and take
them to the church that has been designated as an area to drop them off.

Thank God.

I've been unable to read any of the postings regarding this, afraid it
would make me fall apart. I finally had the courage to open this one,
and it's blessed news.

Thank you for posting this :) I'm so glad that help is arriving at
last for the animals as well as the people. Such shocking scenes on
the news,  so much suffering:(

I just saw this article about the animals in the Audubon Zoo and several
other facilities.  This seems to be one of the few bright spots in that
horrible tragedy.

They must be letting people in because I just got word that my SIL (vet
tech)  in TX just headed to NO with a group of Vets and techs that she works
with to assist with rescued animals.

I myself would never donate to the Red Cross as I don't trust their
organization. I did however donate to Alley Cat Allies Compassion Fund which
will help out the animal rescue organizations affected by the Hurricanes.
There were feral cats near one of the levy breaks so we hope they'll be
rescued though the worst is possible. They also have a working relationship
with Noah's Wish. If you want to know more about ACA go to www.alleycat.org.
