Does anyone know if the animal shelters in New Orleans have evacuated with
all the cats? I read the Louisiana SPCA had a preparedness plan for Hurrican
Dennis but wondered about Hurrican Katrina.
I hope many of the people who have cats in New Orleans or are in the path of
the hurricane evacuated with their cats. They say about 1 million people
will be homeless and I have to wonder how many animals. I hope all of them
are ok but the news seems to fail to report about the animal shelters
evacuating animals.

Never mind. It appears some animal shelters did have an evacuation plan and
are moving adoptable animals to shelters in Houston. I pulled this off
Yahoo.

I dunno where you are but areas where 'canes are a frequent happening -
usually but not always in summer -
pretty much have intricate plans for evacuating all living things in case of
worst case scenario. Much better plans than areas like Carolinas, Virginia,
Georgia, etc. that are not used to constant threat of 'canes in their daily
lives.
Get this: hoomin shelters always turned away people trying to bring in their
pets also (these shelters are usually but not always large buildings and
schools)...not no more:
@ least a few shelters now welcome pets too as public safety officials
finally realized people would stick w/their pets and go back home to unsafe
conditions!

Here in Arizona I know the AHS will setup an emergency shelter for animals
evacuated due to Wildfires or other emergencies.

I know that most shelters in these things don't. I'm glad they are changing.
That is absolutely correct that many people won't go if their pets can't. I
found this interesting in the article:

"The Louisiana SPCA said anyone who abandons their pets could be charged
with cruelty to animals."

You wonder if they really would. You sure hear about it happening enough.
It's all just awful.

I know they've been announcing on local t.v. stations that shelters do
NOT allow pets. I'm not in the path of the storm, though (knocking on
wood).. maybe there are some in LA that do allow pets.

I don't know what all shelters do in all areas re prrmitting pets in during
'cane evacuations. The shelters I heard/read are permitting pets in are all
in s.FL. Haven't a clue what went down in NO about this.

One of the updates on the news stated that evacuees that had animals were
able to get into some hotels in neighboring states with them. A reporter
from one of the news stations said he saw at one hotel people walking their
cats and dogs on leashes. Anyway, I am trying to get some additional
information on some of the rescues in New Orleans that hopefully evacuated.
The Louisiana SPCA was not the only one there. There were a number of other
cat rescues in New Orleans that hopefully will drop us a line and let us
know if they got out ok. If I hear any news I'll try to post it here.

Well it didn't take long to find out some people did indeed leave their
animals behind in the affected areas? I have to wonder what these people
were thinking leaving their cats behind. Did they think their cats were such
good swimmers? It makes me mad that some people don't think about saving
their animals until after they leave the area. Sorry, it is hard to curb my
anger here. One person was quoted as saying.

"I'd left town for a few days. . . now it's turned into an unknown period of
time. My cats and pictures of my recently deceased father are the only
things I care about."

You'd think if this person cared they would have evacuated with their cat.
It is terrible that this destruction occured but how many times must it be
drilled into people via the media and other means that you need to evacuate
with your animals, not leave them behind to drown or suddenly remember 3
days later that you forgot to rescue the cat. If I had to evacuate due to
disaster, my cats would be the first to be loaded in the car not left behind
for them to die horribly.

I totally agree what is wrong with those people! To forget your pet is
like forgetting your own child!! If you don't consider your pets family
members you don't deserve to have them!!! Pets are not just cuddle
toys, they have feelings, and they are a LIFE!
I'd like to ask those people if they would leave behind their baby to
fend for themselves. Selfish selfish people!! I feel so bad for the
animals now that rescue efforts seemed to practically seize now. Still
so many people to rescue and no one seems to care about the animals.
Atleast the people can get water and food sometimes from rescue
trailers. What about the stranded dogs and cats. ANIMALS CAN'T LINE UP
AND ASK FOR FOOD OR WATER!
If only there was something we could do!!!

Actually there is something we can do to help feline victims. I typed up the
following as soon as I heard.

For those that are curious, Alley Cat Allies is taking donations to help the
feline victims of Hurricane Katrina. The Alley Cat Allies Compassion Fund
will be sending current donations to help small grass roots and small to
mid-sized feline rescues providing on-site hands-on care to the feline
victims of Hurricane Katrina.

http://www.alleycat.org/katrina.html#assist

The need will be massive from what their Web Site has posted. You can also
make payment by check to the following:

Alley Cat Allies - Attention Compassion Fund

Barb from before - 02 Sep 2005 15:47 GMT
I saw a woman on TV sitting outside the big Astrodome with her cat.  Wish I
could have plucked them out.  Also, a man with his two dogs sitting on a
rooftop with a few other people including a tourist from Ireland.  They were
terrified that they would be shot by the marauding gangs with AK 47s below.
Imagine the impression of us this tourist is forming.  The man was
heartbroken because he and his dogs had to swim to safety since boats
wouldn't pick them up.  He blamed himself for doing this to them by not
evacuating sooner.

Of course I don't look busy,

Here is another update regarding the rescue of cats and other animals
affected by Hurricane Katrina.

Besides the team that the Arizona Humane Society sent to Baton Rouge another
is on the way. 3 members of the EAMT (Emergency Animal Medical Transport)
team and a veterinarian are also on their way to Louisiana and will be
allowed into New Orleans by Monday to help search for, rescue and treat any
injured or displaced animal that they find. The EAMT's specialize in
technical rescue which makes them a unique asset to help the animals in
search & rescue type situations. The animal rescue team will be escorted by
armed personnel for safety reasons.

If you are looking to ways to donate to help the animal rescue efforts there
are ways. One is to donate to donate to Alley Cat Allies Relief Fund which
will then send them on to the small to midsized groups already providing
on-site, hands on care to feline victims of Hurrican Katrina. Click on
http://www.alleycat.org/katrina.html#assist for more details on how to
assist the feline victims.

The Arizona Humane Society is also accepting donations for their relief
efforts by clicking the donate button on their Web Site at www.azhumane.org.
Make sure when filling out the donation form that you specify that your
donation go to the AHS Rescue & Relief Fund.

You can also make a donation through the Humane Society Of The United States
at http://www.hsus.org and click the donate button.

We have contacted Cafepress about our wanting to donate part of the proceeds
of t-shirts and other items from our Cat Galaxy store to help out the feline
relief efforts and hope to hear a decision this week so we can make an
announcement on that this week. Meow!
