I have a variety of brushes I use on Kami, who has long hair, depending
on what we need to do. I have a boars hair brush (one of mine) that
she LOVES brushing her face on and it pulls loose hair from the top of
her coat. I have a no-tangle comb where the individual tines spin so
it doesn't pull so bad. It's really, really good at pulling loose hair
from all the way down, and on occasion hair that wasn't really loose,
just snarled... ouch. I have a "slicker" bush which is the bent wires.
They make them with nubs on the wires, but I don't think it does a good
job. We use the slicker when just really needs a deep and thorough
brushing with a little matting. Finally, I have what looks like a
blow-dry brush. It pulls up the loose hair, too, but it does hold it.
We go out on the patio to use this one because the fur just flies
everywhere.
In short, use what you need and what you cat likes. All the brushes
are sitting on the floor near her living room bed and she will
sometimes tell me she wants a grooming and with which implement.

Hairball stuff once a week or twice. I think that the comb works better than
a brush and shedding tools work great too.
