Hiya,
I've been giving Kim a half  5mg tablet of prednisolone in the
morning and evening for her trout pout and tonight I couldn't get her
to swallow it and I guess tomorrow will be the same too. I crushed it
up in her meal and wondered if it's ok to do that?

That is what I do. I got this GREAT mortor and pestle at the kitchen knick
knack store (cheap too) and it is fantastic for crushing pills. Pred is
nasty tasting so you have to put it in soemthing really yummy. This is the
pestle:

SImilar to this:

Only a little flatter and wider but the crusher deal fills the whole bowl
like that. Crushes in two seconds. WORKS FANTASTIC. Crushes to powder. Very
fine.

Thanks Karen,  I put the crushed pill in her dinner and she ate it,
no problem.

Cool.

I use a mortar and pestle as well for my dog's pills, the cats will
swallow the pills whole, the dog likes his sprinkled over food ... picky
picky picky :)

This is probably only applicable in Australia - but I have found most cats
will swallow bitter tabs like Prednisolone if you smear them very lightly
with Vegemite. Most Aussie cats like Vegemite, along with the rest of the
population! It's based on yeast.

I think the rule of thumb (which has room for error of course!) is
that coated tablets shouldn't be crushed, but if it isn't coated,
it's usually safe. Always best to check with the vet.  My own
experience, though, is that I've never had luck with getting a full
dose in to a cat by mixing it with food. They always seem to taste
it. Even with a liquid med for Shamrock, I couldn't get him to
drink it in tuna water, which he usually loves. Others have good
luck with this method, so it proves YMMV.  ;)

What is trout pout?
