Someone online just rescued 2 small kittens and needs to find an alternative
to feed them until she can get replacement milk. She apparently doesn't have
a car so is there anything that can be fed to these kittens until she is
able to get to a store? Thanks.

She should call an emergency vet and go pick up some KMR.  The ER vet
will have some.

In an emergency, she can add an egg yoke to a little cow's milk- this will
boost the protein and fat levels of the milk up to minimally acceptable
levels.  This mixture should be used *only* in an emergency situation for a
*very short time*- just until she can get to a pet store.

She should feed the kittens no more than 5 milliliters (one teaspoon) every
2-3 hours.  If she doesn't have an oral syringe or eyedropper she can use a
straw or pen barrel. Dip the straw in the formula about 1/2 inch and close
off the other end with the index finger to hold the formula in the straw.
Feed the kittens slowly in an *upright* position so they don't aspirate the
formula into their lungs.

Remember, this formula should *only* be used for a *very short time*- a day
or two at the most.

some recipes and info and as others have said get some KMR or equivalent
ASAP. Also tell her to make sure she wipes their butt to get them to pee and
poop.

Thanks for the link. A lot of us in chat already told her what she needs to
do. This lady lives in a small town and just found those kittens and has
been feeding them regular milk which we advised against. I forwarded her the
info she needs so hopefully someone will drive her to the store so she can
get the stuff for them.

I have heard that Goat's Milk is an acceptable substitute - but only
short term until one can get to an emergency Vet.  Jen

At least she's willing to try to help these guys.

Are there any rescue groups in her area that might be able to set her up
with some KMR? She can check for groups through Petfinder. One of them might
be willing to get her some KMR particularly if she's willing to bottle feed
them and isn't looking for a foster home immediately.

The only rescue group that I found in Bullhead City is an AC&C shelter. I
suggested she contact them for assistance as that seems to be the only
rescue I found for her area.

Hope they can help then. So many groups are overwhelmed this time of year
but sometimes if you are clear that you're not asking them to take the
kittens now, just looking for some help to deal with the situation yourself,
they are more willing to help out. Hope that's the case here or she can get
someone to get to the store for her.
