I am a veterinarian working in a small animal practice in Central Vermont. A client of mine, 4 or 5 years ago, attempted to become an exotic cat breeder (specifically Bengals and Abyssinians). Unfortunately she has bred a great number of cats but was unable to part with any of the litters. As a consequence she has become a hoarder and potentially has 100 to 150 cats in her house. Although this woman is very nice she obviously has some problems and is finally seeking some medical treatment. Therefore she can no longer care for her cats. The humane societies in Vermont are at full capacity at this time and no one can seem to help out with this problem. I am volunteering my time and resources to help find her cats homes. If not, they will all have to be euthanized. I personally will be going into the house to select out the healthy individuals and make sure they are up to date on their vaccines. This is a very unfortunate situation but hopefully with some good will some of these cats can be adopted out to good and loving homes. The house they are currently living in has been condemned by the Dept. of Health. In conclusion, I am seeking help in finding an alternative to euthanizing young, healthy cats of an unfortunate circumstance. This is such a sad story, good luck with your effort. Vermont is not a populous state, obviously. Perhaps you could also reach out to cities and areas within a day's drive that could deliver the cats to potential adopters there, like Burlington, or Boston or Albany...Maybe organize a car pool to deliver the cats. Also definitely contact local television stations and newspapers with your story - that will help spread the word. I think there is progress being made, but this guy is all on his own and indeed, trying to absorb this many cats into central Vermont is a long shot at best. Unfortunately, this comes at the same time as kitten mania, so these cats don't have the best chance, but Dr LeGallais has gotten the word out, that's for shure! Perhaps if you contact the vet that is heading the rescue effort, he can take donations over the phone. I don't know that there is a fund set up yet. Our rescue's president has been in contact with other shelters in New England as this message has been circulating everywhere. There was difficulty verifying this at first as none of the Vermont shelters were contacted about this case.
