Finding a roommate for a 14-yr-old single female cat?

My brother lost both his beloved kitties over the last few years. He's
living with my sister, who owns a 14-year-old, rather unsociable
female (the cat likes my sister, but hates my brother and visitors).
This cat is one of those Maine-Coon-lookalikes, who always had issues
with the other deceased cats - brother and sister tortoiseshell
moggies.

My poor brother misses having his own cats. The remaining cat resident
doesn't like him, and certainly doesn't cuddle him. His cats though
lived in his room and covered him with affection.

Is there any strategy you might suggest to bring new cats into this
household? Is the older cat's antisocial behavior a total red flag, or
is there some other way to get my brother some new kitties without
wrecking the senior cat's life?

Our cat Abby lived happily with her brother Tom in the early 90s. Tom
was killed by dogs when they were a year old. We brought Tiger home as
a kitten and she loved him, pinning him to the floor to groom him. As
we added other strays and cast-off cats to the house she became more
angry, though she was always loving to me. Maybe this is just a
characteristic to spayed females?

I want my brother to have his own cats, and I want my sister's cat to
have a pleasant retirement. Any ideas on how to go about this would be
greatly appreciated.

Honestly, I don't know if I would bring in another cat into this situation.
No, it's not a characteristic of spayed females.  I have four and they all
get along fine with the other cats.
It could just be from her being the only cat for so long, she doesn't know
how to get along with other cats at this point.
If he really wants to try it, I would get a young adult, friendly male who
does not have any dominance issues.  Do the intros slowly!  Go to a no-kill
shelter and explain the situation and they can help pick out the best cat
for the situation.  If it does not work out and he has to return the cat, at
least the cat won't be sentenced to death.
