I've caught Loki, my 5 year old neutered male, mounting Toffee (spayed
female) twice today. He seriously looks like he wants to get it on with
her! Poor Toffee seemed confused. Loki was neutered at 12 weeks. I've
never seen him display this type of behavior. Toffee is a very quiet,
unobtrusive cat, doesn't try to bully the others, so I don't know why he
would want to display dominance. Loki has never been a dominant cat,
either. Why would he do this all the sudden?

Well, the first answer is because he's a male. I have a neutered male
who sometimes tries to get it on with one of my three females - always
the same one. She gives him a swat and he's on the run.
I think it happens because it's still an instinctual thing that pops
up now and then. I feel more sorry for Rudy, the male, because once
he's on Millie, he looks around with the most clueless expression,
like, "Uh.... what now?"

Shamrock does that to Scarlett, too. I thought it was because she
went into heat very young (4 months) before I could get her spayed
(she was sickly) and he *remembered* that part of his anatomy when
she went into heat. He was castrated at over a year old, at least 2
years before Scarlett and Rhett came into the picture. Now I just
think he's exerting his dominance. How long have you had Toffee?

I've had Toffee for about 2 1/2 years now. Toffee and Loki have always
gotten along. They don't cuddle or anything but I've never seen them fight
either. The only thing I can think of is that I opened the windows for the
first time in like a month or so, since it wasn't ungodly hot today. Maybe
he smelled something or the fresh air got him all excited?

Could be Kelly! All I know is that I was told not to chastize
Shamrock for this behavior, but to distract him, or distract
Scarlett from under him (works even better, and easier). If
Shamrock does that when I'm around, I get out the laser pointer.
The sound of the case it's kept in being opened always gets
Scarlett excited and she wiggles out from under him and looks
around for the red dot. :)

I've seen girl cats do it to each other too, very strange, a bit of
humping - then when they both realise they're not getting anywhere,
desist, and then (presumably feeling a bit daft) start the grooming bit
(i.e. there's nothing wrong, I'm just cleaning myself, don't know what
you're all looking at!) Highly amusing but hard to explain to young
child.

That is weird. I've read on these newsgroups that's a dominance thing,
but that doesn't quite fit since Loki isn't normally a bully. I've not
had that happen with my cats though. Wonder what's going on in his
little head.

LOL! The one male I have who does the mating thing - well, attempts
it - is definitely the Omega Cat in our household of 5. I think it's
the only way he can try to assert dominance at all:

Scroll down to Rudy!

Your cats are beautiful! I especially liked their stories, and the
link to the Killer Cam that has Rudy (?) in the pic. LOL Thanks for
sharing your site!

Thanks so much. I think they're all very special, even Aretha (the
one in the KillerCam shot) who has one neuron in her brain. She
doesn't have to be smart because she's beautiful. ;-)

I think it may have been something from outside, maybe a new cat in the
neighborhood I haven't seen yet. Today the windows are closed again and no
humping.
