Hi
Just found this group and its so very interesting and informative! First
off we had one cat for 8 years *Schmoopie*, well brilliant me decided we
needed a kitten to amuse and irritate him, so I talked the hubby into
it. They get along ok, but now there are new problems arising. Last
month Schmoops eyes were swollen and weeping. Took him to the vet and
found out he had Herpes and the stress of the new kitten caused the
outbreak (after being dormant all those years!) Ugh! Now i've noticed
both cat and kitten scratching there ears. From the looks of the insides
of there ears they both have ear mites, which i'm sure the kitten gave
him. They are indoor cats. My question (finally) is do you think a vet
visit is necessary, or can i just buy some ear mite medicine that i see
at Petsmart? I called my vet and of course she told me to bring the
kitten in, and that i would be wasting my money on "buying that crap"
from the store!! I keep telling myself it was a *good* idea to get this
kitten......
Any advice?
Thanks!
Bonnie

Get some Acarexx from the vet and dose both cats. Don't bother with
any other treatemnt - either prescription or OTC. Acarexx is the best
thing to use.

Have you had the kitten to the vet to be checked out, have a stool sample
checked for worms and started on shots? If so I'd be disappointed that the
vet didn't pick up the ear mites. Mine always checks new kittens for mites
and has looked and found them (showed me under the microscope) even before
the typical 'coffee ground' schmutz showed up.

Revolution will get rid of ear mites, fleas, and some kinds of worms. You
get it at from the vet.
The kittens should have a vet check, anyway.
Sometimes people think they will save money be buying over-the-counter
products for parasite control. Then, after trying several things for
different problems, they find out it would have been better and less
expensive to go the vet and get something effective the first time. It
saves the pet from a lot of prolonged suffering, too.
Good luck with your cats.

Revolution should take care of it, but a vet visit isn't uncalled for, just
in case they have a particularly bad infestation. The vet can clean the ears
thoroughly (and make sure it IS just mites and not some kind of infection)
and then apply the revolution.

I'd recommend a vet visit. Sookey-Boo was scratching his ear and we took
him to the vet, it proved to be an earmite. However, the earmite was the
least of our problems, he ended up having a hematoma from scratching, needed
surgery, daily vet visits for 3 weeks (he became the most popular cat at my
workplace and on the subway) and required surgery, now he has a cauliflower
ear. It appears in one of his scratches he did a fair bit of damage. For
two weeks we drained the ear with a syringe hoping to avoid the surgery due
to his age (vet recommendation, I do not home diagnose my cats). Well for a
simple earmite we ran into thousands of dollars.. The cauliflower ear just
adds to his attitude. For the record, we tell him he has two perfectly
normal ears lol

Thanks for your interest Trish. Brought the kitten into the vet, she
started it on Revolution, plus gave me enough for my older cat, so i
didn't have to bring him in too, which was great! On a lighter note,
since this was also the kittens first visit i scheduled the shots and
all that other good stuff, come to find out that my Tigger Boy was
actually a Tigger Girl! Ha! I felt pretty stupid to say the least, but
hey the previous owner told me *she* was a *he*, guess i never
checked........
Bonnie ( who is having a hard time splaining that one to the hubby!)

lol luckily Tigger is a good name for either sex. I'm glad the vet visit
went well and that you were able to get Revolution for both cats in one
visit. My vet gives me a package for each animal with one visit as well.
Hey, he makes a fair sum off it, Revolution is expensive but works wonders.
A funny story to add to yours, when I worked with seals a guy brought us a
seal that he found and had named Kevin, no idea why but we didn't check the
sex either, well a few months later out pops a pup, you can imagine our
shock. We still called her Kevin though, but suddenly her behaviour began
to make a whole lot more sense to us :) She was possibly the most beautiful
harbour seal I've ever seen, very spotty unlike the males who tended to have
a darker colouring and less spots.

Sorry to say it but take the kitten in have the ear mites treated have the
kitten tested for other diseases, because the kitten could have given the
herpes to your older guy. If so you need to know if the kitten has anything
else to share besides ear mites and fleas.
