All,
I'm trying to do some research on the best foods to feed Meep for her
long-term health.
Right now she's on Royal Canin Urinary dry, but the package actually
says to feed it only for up to 12 days, or up to 6 months. My vet
didn't mention that the urinary was for short-term use only... Is it?
I'm concerned that long-term use might promote calcium oxate crystals,
according to what I've been reading.
If it is, what are good brands of premium/natural catfoods (dry and wet)
that will help promote good health? I've been looking for any webpages
that compare foods, wet and dry, by the important nutrients for urinary
health, but have been coming up blank. Specifically, the magnesium
percentage, and the addition of DL-Methionine.
As those who read my posts probably realize, Meep is a very fussy cat.
For years, she'd eat only Iams Ocean Fish dry, but then suddenly didn't
like it any more (they must have adjusted their formula). After some
experimentation, I discovered that she like James Wellbeloved, a British
catfood. However, I see that the primary ingredient is actually white
rice, which I'm thinking isn't the healthiest thing for her. She's even
more finicky about wet food. I can't find anything she'll eat
consistently, though she seems to like Felix bags the best. Doesn't
seem like that'd be either premium or natural tho...
I've also seen some disagreement on the role of protein in urinary
health. One site says low protein is better for reducing crystals,
another says high protein is. AAUGH!
I may try to order some food off the internet, though I'm not sure if
I'll be able to, due to UK rules. But, JIC, I'm looking for both US and
UK brands of catfood, both wet and dry.
Any help or advice appreciated. I hope it's not confusing for me to
break up the different cystitis sub-topics: I tend to lose track,
otherwise.

This is JMO, not very scientific or anything, but I think feeding more wet
than dry food is the key to keeping a cat from developing crystals.
My cat Bartleby had a few UTI's and blockages in a row a couple years ago.
My vet put him on Hill's C/D dry, never said anything about feeding wet
food. He still got blocked. I had to find out about wet food for on here.
I feed several different types of high-quality wet food, including
Authority, Nutro Natural Choice, and Wellness. I do feed some dry snacks
during the day, mostly for my cats that don't care for wet. Bartleby is not
that interested in dry, so it all works out.
Also make sure she is drinking plenty of water and the litterbox stays clean
(I'm sure it does). The only time I had an incident with Bartleby was after
my husband took over doing the litterboxes and he doesn't exactly do it as
frequently as I do. Bartleby got upset and got a UTI, which resolved
quickly.
