Hello :)
This morning my son informed me that when he went to the mailbox around 8`ish ,
he heard a kitten crying somewhere outside. A few hours later my husband went
into the garage and heard a kitten crying. We followed the sound and it lead us
to the window box under the garage window......it is very protected and hidden
by evergreens. We found one dirty, but seemingly healthy kitten. The eyes are
almost completely opened, it is active, chubby and warm. I have checked on it
every 15 minutes in hopes that the mother would be there, but she never is. The
kitten alternates between crying and sleeping.
My question is this......how do you know when a kitten has been abandoned and
needs human intervention? I called one animal shelter and they weren`t very
helpful and seemed more concerned in making it clear that they couldn`t help
this kitten. They are predicting rain and temps in the 50`s tonight, so I am
concerned. Thanks for any info.

Hi Jackie,
If you can't find the mother, it is possible that he is abandoned. I would
definitely take the kitten inside tonight. Here is a link with more
information about orphan kittens: http://tinyurl.com/ooxt
It's important to feed him kitten replacement milk which you can get at most
pet supply stores.
Good luck and let us know what happens.

I agree. Take him inside. Evenif he has a mother, he shouldn't be wandering
around outside.

If the kitten is crying, unfortunately it probably means mom has not been
back for awhile, and he's hungry. I got into this situation a couple years
ago with FOUR kittens....it's not that difficult to hand rear them, and it's
actually a lot of fun. I too called all the local animal agencies and they
told me that they couldn't help--that the kittens were too young...

One day, I was out jogging in a nearby regional park. Stopping to
catch my breath, I heard a little yowling in the bushes. Turned out
to be a little tabby kitten ... hungry and a little dehydrated. Palm
sized. I took "him" home and fed him some milk with a small syringe.
Took some doin' to get him to drink. I also noticed there was no
reflection back in his eyes when checked with a flashlight. About 5
days later, the reflection off the retinas started to form. This
means the kitten was about 2-3 weeks old when I found him. Clean bill
of health at the vets. Now... at 13 1/2 yrs of being an indoor cat,
this has been the best cat I've ever owned. Very attached to me and
personality PLUS.
