Newsman - 24 Jul 2005 16:54 GMT I have a 15yo male cat. I'm leaving on a 9-day vacation soon. My neighbor is going to look in on him in the morning/evening, and I have a sitter coming in the early afternoon. But I also want to leave my cat with a toy that can occupy him, particularly in the early morning/later evening when he has more energy and will be alone. I'd appreciate it if someone would recommend a good toy for my older cat. Ideally, the toy won't be so small that he'll lose it under a piece of furniture, etc.
Thanks!

Here they call it a Turbo Scratcher, and I agree - a safe toy that can keep any of mine busy for literally hours! A cat tree near a window is ideal, as someone else pointed out, or even perches at the windows or just something that they can sit on by the window with room for a nap.

I agree with these two suggestions. Also, I would suggest a selection *several* smaller toys (little mice, etc.). Don't worry about it if they get lost under furniture. Your cat will be able to find them while he is "visiting," and he needs a variety of toys to encourage play and activity. I would also like to "second" the comment made by another reader who advised you to avoid anything with strings attached. Cats will swallow string, rubber bands, etc. and that can be deadly.

Just don't leave him anything that dangles on a string as a cat can get tangled and choke on it. I would say one of those plastic rings with a ball in a slot that they can "chase" around.

They're about 2 feet x 1 ft and one end opens up with velcro so you can dump catnip inside. It's not really a toy, but my cats all love to lay on that blanket, roll on it, get under it, then fall asleep on it. We have 2 of them. I think they like having their own "stuff."
Does your kitty have a cat tree, too? If you have one, put lots of catnip on it before you go, and hopefully it is next to a window so he can do some bird watching. I fyou have anywhere outside you can hang a bird feeder or a hummingbird feeder, that will assure he will have something to watch.
You could also leave something like a big cardboard box filled with crumpled up tissue paper so he can get in there and rummage around and play.

All three of mine love it. lol as well as the dog.
It's called a kitten mitten toy and here's a pic of it, except I bought a blue one.

Even my oldest cat loves it, I rub it over his tummy and he grabs it and kicks with his back legs.
Newsman - 24 Jul 2005 22:16 GMT Thanks everyone! You've given me several good ideas.

The easiest to set up is a cordless infant room monitor which you can buy at major department stores for about 20 USD. Best is to hook up the receiver to a better speaker, if you can do that.
It also depends on how soon you are leaving. You should probably keep the volume very low at first. But I would do that anyway, sooner or later. Cats need to use their ears.
And give him a view of the outdoors.
