After working in a vet's office for 2 years (and seeing several cats and people
reunited) I had my tabbyboy, Sammy, microchipped when he was 10 months old.
You never know when your cat might bolt when a door is ajar, window is opened,
carrier is unlocked accidently, etc.  When a stray is brought to a vet or a
shelter, a scan (to see if there is a chip) is supposedly performed. The chip
ID number leads to one of several data banks which store the owner/guardian's
address & phone.

The article said he seemed to.

I have a related story.

When I was about 15, someone gave me a kitten - Fletcher.  He was a
gorgeous black and white cat with a characteristic black splotch on
his nose which I called his "booger" - In fact his nick name was
"Booger Nose".  We had him about 8 months, had him neutered, and he
was an indoor-outdoor cat.  One day he disappearewd into thin air - I
saw him out on the porch and 20 minutes later, he was gone.  We
searched and searched the neighborhood.  No cat - ran an ad in the
paper, put up posters - nothing.  I was absolutely heartbroken.  I
cried about it for years.

Fast-forward eight years later.  I was back in my hometown visiting my
Mom.  I went to the home of the Mom of one of my friends from
highschool, to pick her up before a party.  There was Fletcher!  I was
sure of it, because of his booger nose.  I asked my friend where her
Mom got the cat.  Her response: "I got him from Cindy B - he lived
with us at school.  He was our cat and when we graduated, he came home
with me."  His new name was Oedipuss.   Cindy B. was two years older
than I, and lived in my neighborhood when we were in HS - she
evidently picked him up and took him to college with her, without any
regard for the fact that he already had a home and a girl who loved
him.

So here was my Fletcher - almost 9 years old.  Had a full life without
me, and was perfectly safe and sound.  I petted him and he seemed to
recognize me - my friend said that he wasn't usually that friendly to
strangers.  I swear he had a look on his face like "Oh, THERE YOU
ARE!"  I left him with my Friend's Mom.  He lived to be 17.

He may have been their Oedipuss, but he will always be my Fletcher.
:*)

What if TED had a whole new life with a family that REALLY cared and loved him
and now he's been sent back to his former owner? The former owner even said
himself that it appears that Ted seems to have been well taken care of over the
past 10 years. That really scares me that if one of my strays I have now
happens to have a chip in him and he gets lost and goes back to someone that
didn't look after him. I better check for chips huh?
There may be someone who is heart broken over Ted's disappearance. But hey at
least he is safe now anyway.

Well, it's probable that he was living somewhere else. But since he ended up at
a humane shelter where the chip was scanned, it's good that someone was able to
claim him.

I always do.

There may well be, but how would they have been reunited since he had no other
identification?
