creative built-in cat walk/ladder home reno ideas?

Hi All!

Have just read the post about the cat that launched itself at a
hanging wall rug/carpet and another poster's response
about someone carpeting a wall with carpet leftovers for his cat.  I
had actually been thinking about doing this
in my new home for some time and am wondering if anyone here has done
anything creative in the same way cat-wise?

I have a 8-month-year old - Dolly.   I'm getting a new apartment soon
and have the opportunity to do some renovating
and adding some creative cat ideas.

I found this site http://brushyland.com/cats/catwalk.htm (i think
from reading this group also) some time ago and
its been the starting point. I've been throwing around a few ideas for
some "built-in" cat renovations such as:

- a cat walk near the ceiling like the one at the site above
- and/or some kind of cat ladder/cat-steps built into the wall leading
to some kind of outpost-style perch.
- wall to wall shag carpeting for one room (cat heaven! .. ?)
- a shag carpeted wall (or sisal, or some kind of carpet) (i was
wondering if my cat would take to this and actually climb it though.
thoughts? )

That's all i can think of right now.

I wonder if anyone has recommendations either for a site with similar
ideas, or personal sites of
people who have done "cat things" to their places? I've googled cat
walk and cat run but cat runs seem mostly to be are
mostly outdoor passages, and cat walk just throws up a lot of fashion
stuff.   Any advice or suggestions appreciated, tia.

I think one guy posted that he just took those carpet squares and glued them to
the wall. There is also a great book about one guy's cat house. I think purina
also did a great cat house. A friend of mine got a piece of 4x4 wood and make a
post out of it going from floor to ceiling. He wrapped the entire thing in
sisal rope and the cat loved it. I love those cat walks.

Cats can climb up an expanse of carpet easily enough, but they have
trouble climbing back down.  I made a post wrapped in sisal rope that's
about 6' high.  I put 3 shelves on it just so the cats could get down
easier.

hi ! yes what a great idea - i had thought about a floor to ceiling
pole wrapped in hemp rope or carpet, but i had doubts about whether or
not my cat could (or would want to?) climb something vertically all
the way to the top.  Also what would I do with a floor to ceiling pole
in my living room LOL!  But I still like this idea  and sticking slats
or around it to make "steps" i think is even better!  i think i'm
going to incorporate this with the wooden perch or "balcony"
recommended on the katwallks site that another poster recommended.

thanks !

I just wanted to say our remanents were all short short pile. I think cats
like that better than shag, whatever you do with it. Sounds cool. He used
liquid nails to put the pieces on the wall in a diagonal brick pattern. It
lasted a long time.

I was trying to find the URL for a company who developed shelves that
mount on the wall in a configuration such as what you're describing.
A few people tried those.  I sort of made up some of my own but they
aren't carpetted yet.  I found this thread about what you're looking
for:
http://tinyurl.com/okzy

Another thread about the cat walks:
http://tinyurl.com/ol0c

Finally, the creator's website.
http://www.katwallks.com/

The hoopla of this idea died down so I was never sure how good they
turned out to be.

Hi Cheryl - this is wonderful, and more than I hoped for, thank you!

I followed the link to katwallks - what a fantastic idea.  I like what
they call the "balconies" - right now I think I'm going with the floor
to ceiling pole, with shelves/slats sticking out to make "steps", that
lead up to a katwallk style "balcony" in the corner.  ACtually maybe a
catwalk around one wall as well.  Either that or a series of long
shelves with holes in them (in one of the links posted above, someone
posted plans for this), enabling the cat to move to the balcony in one
corner.  I'm going to get my contractor to configure something. He's
already designed his own cat-walk idea for his own new place (i'm
colleagues with his wife and we both have cats), a set of shelf-like
inlaid carpeted ledges leading vertically upwards to a catwalk that
runs around one or two walls of their aprtment. He drew the line at
knocking holes through the walls and framing them though.  In the
event that the cat doesn't use the ledges (will that happen, dyou
think?) my colleague is going to use the ledges to display her vintage
handbags. I didn't want a series of ledges because I wasn't sure if
they were going to look a little out of place. I 'm not sure how much
less out of place a rope covered full length pole is going to look
though LOL.

thank you all

That sounds cool! Post pictures when you're done, please? :)

I will! It will be awhile though, i don't plan to move in until first
quarter next year.

As a follow up, I did some searching after the initial resources
provided from this thread and have found a list of sites that do cat
walkway or built-in perch stuff for cats.  Great for inspiration if
anyone else is thinking of doing cat reno, cat walks or looking for
stuff like this.

http://www.iroquoisinnovations.com/ (really good for small apartments,
IMO! i really like this one, especially the installation over the
doorway)
check out the testimonials page:
http://www.iroquoisinnovations.com/cat_furniture-test.htm

http://www.kittykornercatfurniture.com/

http://www.houseofcatsintl.com/ (timber deck style / wooden house
perches/elevators, some double as bookshelves, a whole bunch of
elaborate wooden railing cat stuff)

http://thickbikes.com/cats/Cat_Platforms.html#upperMost (home-made
perches for more ideas on where to put perches and how to set them up)

http://www.sophieproducts.com/cat%20wall.htm (wall mounted cat house !
very cute, could get this and stick it in the home office area for
Dolly to hang around while we're busy with work)

Already posted either in this thread or other recommended threads from
this thread:

www.katwallks.com

http://maxshouse.com/Environmental_Enrichment/high-level_walkways.htm
(good one - plans for bookcases /shelves)

There's also this site called fancy feline walkways that comes up a
lot in searches but whose website doesn't work.  Wonder what happened
to that one..

Thanks all!

I have 2 floor to ceiling cat poles.  One of them has 3 ledges on it and the
other has a ledge and then at the top, a cat condo.  The one with the 3 ledges
I got at Walmart and it was only $30.  The ledges are kind of on the small
side, but for the money, it really is a nice cat tree.  They have them on a top
shelf and they come in a box, in case you decide to get one.  My cats actually
like the cheaper Walmart one better than the more expensive one with the cat
condo.

Hi Lauren, sorry to follow up so late, hope you see this message.  I
was wondering about your floor to ceiling poles.  I didn't reply
earlier because i wanted to bookmark your site and check your pictures
later to see the poles but I think there aren't any.  Did you drill
your pole base into the floor, or is it just floor to ceiling height?
i.e. is it like a floor to ceiling pole lamp that fastens to the
ceiling and the wall?  Cat trees here are verrrrrrrry expensive, a
normal 3-foot tree with *nothing* (just a ledge) is over S$100, hence
my build-in preference.

You can use inexpensive bookshelf kits, with holes cut in the shelves and
covered with carpet to make climbing towers to the high-level walkways.  You
can also close in some shelves to make cubby holes and hiding places. The
advantage of free standing bookshelves is no damage is done to the walls.

Hi Phil, yes thanks - the first link was also mentioned in a previous
post (or a referred post).  I was wondering if he had other pages as
well.  Now I wish I had more space or rooms to devote to my cat..

Yes - I forgot to thank whoever posted this link earlier as well.
This book looks FABULOUS!  From the cover picture, it really looks
like the writer's done some great cat things (what should I call this
as a term, "cat renovations" , "builtin cat furniture"?) with his home
and integrated them into his decor.  I've already tracked it down in
my library and will get it this week.  If for some reason it's not
available I'm definitely buying it online.  Do you have any cats?

Thanks to all

They had this house on a tv show, I think it was the Home & Garden channel, not
too long ago.  It was amazing!

I built my cats' high-level walkways a little differently -- without
passageways into other rooms.  In the event of a fire or other emergency it
would be very difficult to get the cats out in time if they access to other
rooms.
