What age should a kitten get separated from its mum? I thought it was
3 months, but I was in the pet shop today, just to buy some catnip, I
hate pet shops. There was some adorable kittens for sale, would never
buy one anyway from shop, but I asked the owner how old they were and
he said 8 weeks, they were so cute I had to beat a hasty retreat as
couldn't cope with another one, what with Otis's various illnesses, it
wouldn't be fair. I wonder if there's a legal age limit in the UK, if
so, does anyone know what the age limit is? If it is older than 8
weeks I'll report them.
Thanks in advance
Marcia

I think it is twelve weeks, but have seen people separate them as young
as six weeks.

Omar was advertised at the OC Shelter as being 8 weeks old.

Twelve weeks *should* be the minimum. Unfortunately, they are often
separated and adopted at a much younger age, at least in the U.S.

8 weeks is the standard legal minimum age for puppies and kittens to be
sold/adopted in most US states. I don't know what it is in the UK. From a
health and well-being standpoint, IMO 12 weeks is better. The shelter I'm
with has started moving towards 10-12 weeks.
