Well, I took TB to the vet today and talked about his prognosis. Hi
latest blood tests that were taken about a week and a half ago showe
that he was "borderline to mildly anemic" most likely due to th
cholangiohepatitis he and I have been fighting for the past 9 months.
For the first time in his life, his Kidney levels were elevated with
Creatinine of 3 or 3.1. He is very lethargic and stopped bathing
which is something he does insistantly, so I know the anemia is what'
causing it. He was given sub-Q fluids, and a vitamin K and B shot.
Thing is, my vet did not recommed any specific treatment for the anemi
other than keep treating the cholangiohepatits. Is there anything I ca
do extra to help the anemia

YES! I am taking Fritz in today to discuss the Epogen treatment fo
anemia.
It CAN be useful in cats with anemias other than renal failure. I foun
a few websites about that. I ordered the Epogen from Drugstore.com $4
including shipping. One month supply. Vets charge a lot more becaus
they have to order multiple vials, or they don't know it can be gotte
cheaply on the internet.
It arrived packed in ice the next day. My vet will either administe
it, or show me how to in the sub-q shunt at home.
Fritz's Hematocrit is around 20. Vets don't like to use Epogen befor
Hematocrit drops below 20 because it can be risky with side-effects. S
they like to wait til there appears to be nothing to lose. Anemia ca
kill the cat so it must be treated somehow.
I am insisting on it because I feel Fritz only has a few month
left...under 5lbs and 19.7 years old....
I am hopeful that he can be helped by the Epogen. It takes a few week
to start working. Epogen was developed as Procrit, a useful anti-anemi
for cancer patients to offset the fatigue. Most vets think it is onl
useful in kidney failure cats but this isn't necessarily true. Chroni
inflammation and liver disease can cause non-regenerative anemia a
well.
I will post results here or at Feline Anemia.com.
If your vet is not knowledgeable SWITCH VETS! Find an all cat clinic
or show your vet all the websites.
If anemia is not bad enough for Epogen try Pettinic an iron supplemen
& Twinlabs Liquid B-Vit. Sometimes the anemia is the result of the bod
not being able to complete the production of red blood cells due to iro
deficiency.
The Liver makes all the building blocks & if it is in trouble, thos
chemical processes do not happen.
Good luck!
