Hello all! I just joined this site, and it looks like your membership
is helpful when advice is needed.

I have two dogs, Chichi, a Chihuahua mix, about 9 years old, and Rocco,
a pom/collie mix (? still not sure on that one, but he's on the small
side), about 2 years old. I also have two cats, who are 12 and 6 years
old. I have now taken in a 3rd cat, which I am fostering until my DS
gets a place that takes cats. (At least that is the plan...)

My two dogs are use to living with cats, and for the most part they get
along fine. The new kitty, which I've now had for about 2-1/2 weeks,
gets along fine with the cats, after some hissing and general "getting
to know you" tiffs. I have kept him in the house until just yesterday,
letting him reside mostly in the den, so that the dogs could not get to
him. I have let them have supervised "visits" with the cat, wherein
they normally get hissed at, the cat runs, and the dogs pursue him.
That is the problem. So far, the dogs are displaying what I see as
aggressive behavior toward the new cat, even though they can walk right
past the other two, even butt heads showing affection.

It scares me a little to think they would really hurt the newbie. How
long (in general) do you think it will take before they get "the look"
out of their eyes, and does anyone have any advice on things to try to
get them to at least not chase the cat. I suspect that if the cat
didn't run, the dogs would not chase him. The poor cat doesn't know
that they are use to living with cats, and the dogs take advantage of
that!

BTW, all of these pets are neutered.

Thanks!

I've had a lot of dog/cat combos over the years, and all have ended up
pals.

My suggestion would be to do one dog at a time with the cat. Just the
new cat and one dog, and either restrain the dog with your hands or on
a leash. When the cat runs by and hisses and the dog wants to chase,
restrain him, and do lots of petting and praise. Let the cat do its
thing, but teach the dog not to pursue.

You'll need lots of patience on this, and then you need to start with
the other dog.

This has worked for me in the past, but it's time consuming. Eventually
you can stand/sit by the dog and keep saying "Stay, stay" but not have
to fully restrain him.

And then eventually they'll be friends. IMO of course, but I've never
had a dog and cat that didn't end up as best pals, no matter who was
there first, and no matter the ages.
