Hello,
I adopted my cat Diddy about 2 years ago and have been lurking here
since. I'm finally posting because she's been exhibiting some very
strange behavior that I don't know how to deal with.
At the end of May I moved into a new apartment with her. She hid under
the bed for a couple days, but then adjusted very well. In the middle
of June we got her a perch for the living room window and she quickly
clamied the perch as one of her favorite spots.
But then around the beginning of July, when the firecrackers started
going off in my neighborhood (this isn't a "new" neighborhood as I only
moved 2 blocks away, so the noises have been around since she has), is
when this started. Since then she will not go in the living room at
all. She will pass through very timidly. But even when I pick her up
and take her in there, she gets very tense, and looks intently at the
window where her perch is, like it is going to get her. When I put her
down, she takes off out of the living room like a banshee.
We suspect that maybe somebody saw her in the window and spooked her,
or that the firecrackers really did her in. But even if it's something
else, She really isn't acting normally.
A trip to the vet is the next step, but I thought I'd see if any of you
could advice.
Thanks, Tom

Hi Tom,
Something must have really scared her. She's had a lot of changes in the
last few months -- new house, new perch, firecrackers. I'm wondering if
the perch slipped and scared her, or a couple of things happened at once?
Could you try taking the perch down for awhile, since she keeps staring
at it? Maybe entice her back into the room with a toy, instead of
carrying her straight into it.
This just make take some time and patience. Things scared our cats after
we moved -- like the furnace coming on the first time. That sent one cat
under the bed for two weeks.
Good luck with her,
Rhonda

Ah poor girl, thats a shame. I think you're right to say something
scared her and fireworks are pretty noisy and scary.
You'll have to persuade her and entice her back into the living
room. I wouldn't try to carry her into the room , let her come round
bit by bit and in her own time. You could leave treats in there , near
the door to start with and play with her with a fishing rod toy and
lure her in .
Feliway can help calm cats , you could put a diffuser in the living
room. Rescue Remedy is often recommended for nervous pets.
