Hi,
I had my cat Callie to the vet a couple of months ago for a checkup and the
doc told me she had to have a tooth extracted but he did bloodwork first and
found certain kidney levels were a little elevated so she was put on a
special diet of Hill's k/d prescription food. She does not like this food at
all and her sister usually ends of eating it.
I was doing some research on the internet and came across a website by Jean
C. Hofve, DVM and she mentioned giving Renafood nutrional supplement. Has
anyone have any knowledge and/or advice on whether this could be an
alternative to the prescription food which she eats very little of?
Thanks in advance... Rick

I don't know about the supplement but have you tried other brands of renal
food - Walthams? Or tried changing to wet/dry food?
My cat was on a renal diet for about 9 months and she did adjust to it
gradually by my mixing it in with ordinary food to start with. However, she
also lost a lot of weight, gradually ate next to nothing and became really
thin and depressed.
Get a second opinion as to whether your cat actually MUST have the renal
diet. Is she drinking/urinating excessively?
Mine became extremely ill on it after 9 months and when everything else was
ruled out I put her back on normal food as it was either that or watch her
die. She has not looked back. She's also gained weight and is MUCH happier.
She only sleeps when I do - the rest of the time is alert, lively and full of
play - something I had never seen before (she was a rescue cat).
I never realised how depressed she was till she went back onto normal food.
My cat was thought to be CRF - a scan shows she does only have one kidney
properly working. The renal diet did stabilise things for her but when she
became very ill for no apparent reason 3 times in a row - suddenly
collapsing etc... the vets were merely guessing by this stage. I felt, and
still do feel that something in the renal diet is missing from normal diet
and that this was causing her the additional problem.
good luck

Renafood is a supplement, not a food, so it's certainly not an alternative
to prescription food (or to any food, come to that). It's also a
controversial product. These links may help:
