This is what our Vet gave us when Sam Cat (she was 15) was put down,
not sure if I like it or not:

If it be I grow frail and weak
and pain should wake me from my sleep
then you ,ust do what must be done
for this last battle can't be won.

   You will sad, I'll understand
Don't let grief then stay your hand
For this day more than all the rest
Your love and friendship stand the test

We've had so many happy years
What is to come will hold no fears
You'll not want me to suffer, so
When the time comes, please let me go

I know in time, you too will see,
It is a kindness you do to me
Although my tail it's last has waved

>From pain and suffering, I've been saved

Do not grieve that it should be you,
Who has to decide this thing to do
We've been so close, we two, these years
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

Oh, ensoul. What happened to Samcat?
ensoul - 07 Jul 2005 03:12 GMT
first she was diag. w/hyperthyroidism and responded well to meds, she
was always a small cat, top weight of 9 lbs...then she had problems
with viomting after eating, antinausea meds helped some as did the more
expensive pet meds, also partially deaf...vet agreed didn't seem to be
in pain, then she would only eat tuna fish or cooked chicken, then 3
days of nothing but water, talked w/vet abt feeding tube...we took her
in for appt. she was down to 6 lbs
vet discovered masses in her throid (sp) and stomach, said was most
likely cancer...hubby and looked at each other, asked if there were any
trmnt options, not unless we went to Vet. teaching Univ 150 miles away
even then options were very limited...she said I'll give you some time
to think, didn't seem to be much of a choice, didn't her starving to
death or last days on a feeding tube....I don't doubt we might right
choice, doesn't make it hurt any less

I am so sorry. There really isn't anything to say to take the pain
away, but I hope you will post in places where people understand
that cats are part of the family--no need to pay attention to those
who don't understand.

I'm so sorry to hear this. You are right, it doesn't make it hurt any less.

or:

Lend Me A Kitten

I will lend to you for a while
a kitten, God said.
For you to love while he lives,
and mourn after he's dead.

Maybe for twelve or fourteen years,
or maybe just two or three.
But will you, 'till I call him back,
take care of him for me?

He'll bring his charms to gladden you
and should his stay be brief,
you'll always have his memories
as solace for your grief.

I cannot promise he will stay,
since all from earth return.
But there are lessons taught below
I want this kitten to learn.

I've looked the whole world over
in search of teachers true,
And from the folk that crowds life's land
I have chosen you.

Now will you give him all your love,
nor think the labor vain?
Nor hate me when I come to take
my kitten home again?

And my heart replied,
"My Lord, Thy Will Be Done."
For all the joys this kitten brings,
the risk of grief I'll run.

We'll shelter him with tenderness,
we'll love him while we may.
And for the happiness that we've known,
forever grateful stay.

But should you call him back
much sooner than we planned,
We'll brave the bitter grief that comes,
and try to understand.

If by our love we've managed
your wishes to achieve,
in memory of his sweet sweet love,
please help us while we grieve.

And when our cherished kitten
departs this world of strife,
Please send yet another needing soul
for us to love all his life.

It's a very touching poem, I'm sorry for your loss, whenever one of my
animals have passed on I always try to remember the happy times and the
silly little thngs they used to do then write them all down, it helps me
always keep them in my heart.  Sending you some warm thoughts.

Maybe ensoul would be comforted by creating a photo page or blog page?

I am really sorry to hear about Sam Cat.

There are many poems and stories that have helped me, but this one
really helps me:

You will find that the hole in your heart
turns into a window,
through which you will find yourself gazing,
wistfully at times,
as you remember that cat's life,
not his death.
