Well, after going through 2 cases of Hill's Liver & Chicken, my cats
stools were pretty normal. It was initially hard to get them to eat the
stuff, but by the end of the last case, they'd accepted it. Ivan's
chronic runs which were present since January had cleared up well, so I
decided to buy some Wellness Chicken to see if it was the culprit. After
just 2 cans, Floppy developed the runs, although Ivan hasn't shown the
symptoms yet. Tomorrow I'm going to the store to buy the Hill's and will
stop feeding Wellness for good. I know many people have said they're
having good luck with the Wellness, but I guess I'm now officially a
Hill's type. Who'd have predicted that -- hell hath froze........

If you are interested in changing brands (to Wellness or any other brand),
you should make it slow and gradual. Many cats will develop diarrhea if the
transition is made too quickly.

I know about that, but they originally had no problem with Wellness and
were on it for about 6 months. The problems coincided with Wellness'
manufacturing leaving Lowell. I switched them to Hill's instantly, and
the problems cleared up within a few days. I can only conclude that my
particular cats don't react well to Wellness.

The only food that was moved out of Lowell was the dry. The canned had
never been made in Lowell (this according to Beverly at OMH). Another
food that I tried when there was a Wellness shortage was Iams chicken.
The cats liked it but I only used one can because I still had plenty of
Wellness. There were no stool problems.

Thanks for the response Mike -- I was originally going to ping you in
the subject line to see if you're still not having any problems. I
really don't know what's up, just that Floppy instantly got the runs on
Wellness. Ivan still shows no symptoms, so maybe tomorrow I might try an
intermediate step and buy some Hills to mix the Wellness with, to see if
they'll do OK with a gradual switchover. Interesting info on the canned
never being from Lowell.

It may just be that Floppy can't handle wellness, I rarely feed it to my
cats and each time I think okay I'll give it another try, Peepers always
gets very bad diarrea but Sook and Squirrel never do, so I'm guessing
Peepers just can't handle it.

That's odd. My current can labels say it was made in Lowell. And if it
was never made in Lowell, why has there been such a problem with the
canned food, that corresponds to the plant's closure?

Ooooops. I'm WRONG! It give the Lowell info and then says elsewhere
that it was made in Canada. I don't know if I have any older cans....

My cats have never had a problem with Wellness canned, but their dry food
did give my cat Otto diarrhea. My other cat was fine with it. Otto had
been on some medication around the time I first tried the dry food, and I
thought that was the problem. Once the meds stopped and his diarrhea
didn't, I stopped the dry food for awhile and it cleared up. As soon as I
tried Wellness dry again, the problem came back. It was too bad, as both
cats ate the stuff like it was candy. At the time my older cat, Tiger, was
extremely thin and I was hoping she'd be able to put on some weight.
Both cats have always liked Science Diet canned & dry. Right now they're
eating SD, Wellness and Petguard canned. My two cats at work will only eat
Science Diet Light canned food, but aren't as picky about dry (also usually
SD Light).

After I get their stools back to normal again, I'll try Wellness Dry to
see if it causes problems. Never did, but I just switched them over to
SD Dry along with canned, so that change will be worth a try. This sucks
-- they were doing so well on Wellness for so long.

my cats would never touch the chicken Wellness.
have you tried any other flavors?
mine are still eating the turkey, and the beef & chicken flavors with
no problems.
You may have just gotten a bad batch or something.

I've tried the Chicken & Fish (?), same result. They used to love the
Chicken -- they'd literally lick the plate clean. Now a good portion
sits as well. The runs have been happening since about January, before
that, no problems.

Ok, I picked up a case of Hill's Liver & chicken today. I'm going to
feed them 1/2 can of each mixed together twice a day and see what
happens.

My cats eat the canned Wellness and then when they are done they have some
dry Wellness. They walk away from the canned when they've had enough and
then one of them leads me over to where the dry food is. This seems to work
well. Apparently my 2 year old's teeth are in excellent shape according to
the vet.

I did it right the first time.
