Vomiting Cat

Hi...My female cat, Kelly, has been vomiting every few days or so. She's 9
years old, and takes Norvasc for high blood pressure. She gets a half pill in
the morning, and a half in the evening - in her food. She can not be pilled -
it freaks her out.

I used to put just the pill in the food and she would eat it, but she started
to get in the habit of eating around it and not eating the pill, I would
grind it up and put that in her food. She does eat all her canned food.

My guess is it's one or a combination of four things...She eats too fast (she
does gobble!), or the fact that she doesn't finish the whole portion and
comes back one or two hours later...or the pill is not meant to be digested
gradually, it needs to enter her system in one chunk...or Norvasc just gives
cats upset stomachs.

There is no hair in her vomit...Although I did notice white streaks which are
probably the pill.

Any ideas? Other than that she is fine - normal stool, behavior....etc.

Vomiting can be a sign of underlying illness (ie. inflammatory bowel
disease, chronic renal failure, etc). She should be seen by a vet to rule
this out. Also, dry food can cause vomiting also.

Where are you now with giving her the pills? Crushed in her food? I
couldn't tell if that is the current method. I think you may have
partly answered your own question, re, how it needs to enter her
system all at once rather than picked at when it's mixed with food.
How is she with liquid medication? If Novasc can be compounded into
a liquid, it might be a better solution as far as getting it into
her. If I were you, I'd let the vet know what you've just posted
and see if they have any ideas as to why she's vomiting, and also
about compounding the medication. I am not familiar with that med,
so I don't even know if it's possible.  Best wishes to you all and
hope you find something that works.

The pill makes her sick.  Some meds do this to me.

I posted here a few times about my cat Romeo who I adopted at the SPCA in
march. He used to vomit about three times a week. I removed the two
stainless steel bowls and started to feed him by hand. During this time he
would drink from a ceramic bowl.  After a few days of no vomit I went to the
dollarama and bought two small ceramic bowls. I give him 1/4 cup Science
Hill Prescription I/D and bottled water. At nite another 1/4 cup. Haven't
picked up vomit since June 21. He is by the way 3 yrs old.
Good luck

She may need an antacid to sooth her stomach. You might ask your vet
about it. Figure out the best dosage and timing for her.

And if she is eating too fast, give her smaller portions to slow her
down.

It could be that her pill is making her sick.  Try purchasing some gelcaps
(ask your pharmacy, they might have them) and put the pill inside a gelcap.
Might be easier for her to swallow.  Also talk to your vet about this to
make sure there's nothing else going on.  Does she also throw up food that
doesn't have medicine in it?

Well, Kelly is back to her old self, and then some....I think she's happy to
get her health back!

I do think that grinding the pill up was a mistake, it probably goes deeper
into her digestive system more quickly when it is in one piece..When it's
ground up, it floats around in her stomach making it upset..

What I do is put the pill in a blob of kitty food, a friend recommended that..
She gobbles that down, I guess it's more tasty. Then I give her the regular
food, but less than before. She doesn't get more till she licks the bowl
clean, which she does. Only then will I give her more, and I wash the bowl,
too. All of that keeps old cat food residue out of her system.

Hope this is the end of it!

Well, some time has gone by, and I've discovered something new that works
pretty well at keeping Kelly's food fresh...I take her small 5" diameter
ceramic bowl, put it in a larger plastic dish from Chinese food, and fill the
space between them with water..I put that in the freezer overnight.

The next morning, the water is frozen and the bowl stays nice and cold for
hours! This keeps the food fresh...it's like she's eating from a deli counter.
I have two bowls the same size, and two plastic dishes..One freezes during
the day for the evening meal, and another freezes overnight for the morning
meal.

I also grind the pill up..but sprinkle it all in one pile and fold the food
over it so it all goes down in one or two bites..

I know that the cold food could be a problem for some cats because the cold
stops the "smell" of the food..but so far this has not been a problem..

I would patent this invention, but it's too easy for people to duplicate at
home!
