Kitten Omar discovered Morningstar brand veggie sausage patties this
morning.  He really goes crazy for the stuff so long as I tear it up in
pinky fingernail sized bits. He's just getting his 10 wk teeth.  Any harm?
This is not a substitute diet or anything that extreme.

check the sodium on the side of the morning star box. Im sure there is
some in it, then based on Omars weight; do the math to figure out what
percentage of daily allowance of ingredients he is getting.

Rule of thumb, if it tastes too good to be true, it probably is.

Omar ate about a tablespoon worth. I tossed the box since these were the
last two patties in the box.

Wow, Otis uses my veggie sausages as footballs.  He always wants a
taste, so I cut him a tiny piece (they must smell like the real thing
to him) - when he realises it's "fake" he spits it out and boots it
under the sofa!

http://www.kelloggs.com/cgi-bin/brandpages/product.pl?product=355&company=23

Each patty is 2.669 Tablespoon (conversion from weight to volume)
One tablespoon equals 14.235 grams or 38grams per patty.

Omar had approx 37% of the patty.

Each patty has 270mg sodium divided by 37% =  99.9mg of sodium

Then, http://cal.vet.upenn.edu/saortho/chapter_58/58mast.htm
These nice folk claim that for good nutrition 2g per day is enough
sodium for an aspiring adult cat.

(based on this alone, the peice of patty you fed your kitten should
give him a 50 days supply of sodium)

This doesn't sound logical I admit; not to mention the kitten will pee
out most of the sodium probably within 1 1/2 days?

On Ruprechts can of Friskies Mixed Grill, it says kittens should be fed
2-3 times a day (as much as they can eat)...this tells me that the
sodium allowance above should be curved. so we'll call it 40 day supply
of sodium.

All this nutritional study has made me hungry for a italian sub! :)

WELL then, I will not be offering veggie pattie samples again. Wonder how
salt biased catss sense of taste is?  I mean, how much is too much by their
taste buds?

Just make sure it doesn't have onions. Those are toxic and build up in
the system.

I have to go grocery shopping (my turn) and need to replentish veggie
supply.  I'll check closely the ingredient label on the sausage patty.
Seems already that the sodium level is excessive for a 3.5 lb 10wk old
kitten (certified postage scale).

Wife and I dined at Canters Deli in LA yesterday.  Brought home left overs.
Omar likes chopped liver, corned beef, and lamb kidneys too!  Kosher of
course. ;^)

God, there used to be a Canters Deli in Leeds, Yorkshire (England)
where I grew up, it was kosher - wonder if they're related!  Even
though I'm veggie now I still remember their wonderful salt beef and
latkes, vienna sausages etc. Mmmm - tummy growling could almost turn
(but not quite!)

But of course!   Next time we're out to Las Vegas, we should visit Canters
Las Vegas .... after Emeril's Delmonico, downstairs in the Venetian, our
favorite dinner house.  Have to get an Omar sitter for that trip.
