OK, I'm trying to be diligent while working from home, it's still early days
and I want to make a good impression and be really productive.

But it's a bit hard to concentrate when a 15+ pound cat insists on getting
in your lap so she can suck her toe and knead on a nice, flabby belly.  The
problem is that I don't have as much lap as I used to, but I now have a lot
more cat!!!

Quite a bit of Sammy is, perforce, hanging off the side of my lap and if I
try to sit up and type, or move to work my mouse, she's likely to tumble
off!

Anyone else have a cat that continued suckling behavior past 1 year of age?

Just don't set down, then you won't have a lap.

I guess I could get myself one of those slings that you see electronic
keyboard players using.  That coupled with a wireless keyboard and mouse and
I could just walk around my office and not off such a nice place to sit and
suck toe!  ;>

Your cat is very connected. Of course socks are not fun in the summer!

Very nice web-site!

I know you hate to make any gestures towards your cat that imply
rejection on any level. However, if this thing is rattling you, and you
don't know how much more you can take. I believe at some point your
mental defenses are going to take over, and just tell the cat no. Just
say no.

What does Van Morrison say, "If I don't let you lick my toes, or knead
my belly, that doesn't mean I'd rather not?" modified. (Dominoe)

Even a mother cat draws a line ~ but the kittens still love her you
know.

When a female eagle builds her nest, she installs thorns in the very
bottom. When the babies get heavy enough, they get uncomfortable with
the thorns, and they leave. It's just a built in way to ensure they
leave when it's time.

I only say this to say, modification is not necessarily a rejection.

The needing and cat part wouldn't bother me as much as the sound he must be
making while working that toe. LOL
Such sweet pictures.

"She" (Sammy is short for Samantha) - and yes, the smacking and purring get
*very* loud.  You can hear her in this "movie" if you turn your computer's
sound up high enough:

A friend of mine found a pregnant stray that was probably 7 years old or
so. She sucked on my shirts every time I visited, especially a terry
cloth one that I had. You could hear her going at it. Whenever I would
need to leave, we'd say, "Well, time to disengage Loretta." My shirt
would be soaked.

LOL.  With me it's a wet spot that left on a *very* embarrassing part of my
lap.  Gawd help me if I ever have to jump up and answer the front door bell
in the middle of one of her toe-sucking sessions!  ;>

Well, mine was in the nipple area, but no one accused me of nursing. :)

Poor Loretta was so scrawny from having been a street cat for so long
that any nutrition would have helped!

I had a probable Maine Coon cat (looked alot like Sammy) who suckled on
my shirt any chance she got, too.  Later, I was told that this behavior
often happens if a kitten is taken away from momma too young (I adopted
her at 5 or 6 weeks, which was the accepted adoption age in that time
and place - was a long time ago and I know better now).

Yeah, we had to take Sammy at 6 weeks too (she was being dropped off at a
no-kill shelter who had refused her because it was the midst of kitten
season last year.
