My wife and I have had our cat, Isabella, for about 6 years. She is
very sweet to us but since she was a kitten has been extremely
aggressive and territorial towards anyone other than us who comes into
the house -- hissing, growling, cornering the person, etc. My wife and
I are expecting our first child in August and we are very concerned
that Isabella will attack the baby. We are heartbroken about it but we
have concluded that we cannot risk it and we cannot keep her.
Does anyone know an animal sanctuary that will take an aggressive
animal? (I am willing to make a substantial donation for her care...)
We live in north-central New Jersey.
Is it more "humane" to euthanize her -- is she better off dead than
miserable for the rest of her life?

She will probably protect the baby just like you. My friend has a cat that
is that way toward anyone but her family. Had her before the two children.
They taught the babies to leave her alone and now that they are older she
sleeps with them. They are "family" others are not. Now, I will say she has
never "cornered" anyone, but you just can't pet her or pick her up and if
you look at her she hisses. However, if you really feel it necessary, you
could contact Best Friends in Utah and see if they are willing to take her.
Hopefully others will have more suggestions.

Why not wait until after the baby is born, then you see how she reacts.
It is quite likely she will defend the baby the same way she defends
you.
