I was just thinking that I know a few pilots in the Seattle and Socal
area through Usenet. Some of these guys are always looking for
an excuse to fly somewhere.
If the airline doesn't work out, I may still be able to get him a flight
up north. Long shot....but maybe.
Someone posted 900 miles. Is that one way or round trip. I don't
have any west coast charts to check the distance.
---MIKE--- - 26 Jun 2005 14:33 GMT
If you are talking about a small private airplane, I would think the
noise would be very frightening to a cat.

Yea, their certainly not quiet. But they're louder outside than
inside. But it is a long shot, and not the ideal solution.
Now I'm hearing about 1200 miles distance. That's a long flight
in a 150 - 200 mph plane.

Someone needs to make sure that Conan has a vet certificate so he can fly.

When you adopt, you get a FOLDER full of paper work which includes a
certificate of sterility and recently administered vaccinations.

The certificate for flying has to have been done within the last ten
days or something like that.......

No paperwork of any kind is needed for some private person
to put a cat in their personal airplane and fly somewhere.

This is true. But that's not what we were talking about, unless I

Except this is past history.  The cat won't be flying, he'll be placed
locally.

Is this news? Does this mean the San Diego man is taking him?

I don't know but I thought Monica said he would be locally placed and I
assumed that the original flight plans were no more.

Didn't mean to speak out of turn but this thread seemed to be based on
things that happened prior to Conan being sprung from the shelter.

I see! I just thought you knew something I don't! Better tell me if
you find anything out. I am looking forward to hearing that he is
in his new home.

No, I haven't heard anything other than what is on the ng.  I was
hoping we would get an update soon, too.  The guy you spoke to sounded
really nice from everything you said.

I suspect we may not get any update. It would be cool if we did. Even if
it weren't very detailed. I don't really need to know anything about the
people that adopt Conan or need to see further pictures, etc. But
rescuers...if you are reading...when placement does happen...just news
to that effect would be really splendid. :)

Oh I feel sure Monica will let us know--not who gets him--that makes
no difference to me--but that he is in his home. She knows a lot of people
care about that beautiful boy!

yes I heard the same thing.....matter of fact weren't two people
heading there at the same time for him....??

Sigh......I can go along with that I was answering Fillup who said he
had a folder of papers for Conan and I was just warning him that the
commercial airlines need a current health certificate.....

Most private planes I'm sure don't go overseas except for the rich and
famous and I would guess paperwork is needed to take an animal out of
the country though. I can't let you go scott free for clubbing
me......lol.....

Yes, and it has to be a specific certificate for flying. You can't just
hand the airlines a huge stack of paperwork.

Hi Bisk,

Some airlines do not require health certificates any longer -- American
does not. They do require proof of rabies vaccine, though.

When I was checking for Conan, I made sure to ask each airline.

Cool. I figured you knew what you were doing, but just wanted to be a
part of the wonderful rescue of Conan, even in just such a little way.

b
Rhonda - 02 Jul 2005 03:32 GMT
That was the neatest thing about this whole situation -- everyone
helped. Everyone was doing their best to come up with ideas and possible
adopters and ways to spring him.

Conan was gone when Dan got there, but he saw two other gorgeous,
friendly orange cats in there. Are you up for another addition to the
family?  :)

So what do I do? Rescue another bunny that no one wants? TNR the black
tomcat that lives in the neighborhood? Hit the local shelter to check
out the kittens? Adopt one of the kittens my friend is taming? Trap and
force socialize Lady Grey (who is getting tame enough I can now "pet"
her with a feather on a stick)?

Soooooo many critters need a home, and so many need homes locally I'm
not convinced I can emotionally justify recusing a cat from SoCal.

b
Rhonda - 02 Jul 2005 05:40 GMT
Well, my idea was written sort of tongue-in-cheek, but thanks for
thinking about it seriously anyway.

Rhonda

PS -- I vote for Lady Grey

I'm feeling ... out of sorts about the bunnies. So while you were joking...

> PS -- I vote for Lady Grey

:) It's been a little more than 12 months since she first stepped into
the house all on her own. She's settling herself in and I don't think
there's any reason to force her to socialize outside of her comfort
zone.

In just the last few weeks she's started following us into the kitchen,
just to see what we're doing, AND (the biggie) when she gets startled
she no longer runs to the door to go outside, she will run elsewhere
into the house.

Now, if we ended up having to move, I'd have no problem bringing her
with us. I worried about that for a while, but I think she'd cope.

b
Rhonda - 03 Jul 2005 03:30 GMT
That sounds great! She's definitely part of your family.

She's doing better than our formerly-feral cat. She was brought in at
apprx. 8 months old. Now at 9 years, we still only see her at night.
It's rare to see her cross through the middle of a room without hugging
the walls.

She's sweet though. I think the formerly-feral ones are grateful.

Rhonda I used American six weeks ago and he needed a health
certificate no less than ten days old you better check before you use
them again, must have changed since your last time using them.

Rhonda - 02 Jul 2005 23:24 GMT
Hmmm, that's odd. Where I got the info was from their website:

Health Requirements

    * American does not require a health certificate for the acceptance
of pets for travel in the cabin or as checked baggage within the 50
United States. However, we encourage you to contact your family
veterinarian or state authorities directly for individual state
requirements to avoid any possible inconvenience at your final destination.
    * All states require proof of rabies vaccination for dogs over 12
weeks old and some require proof of rabies vaccination for cats.
American requires that the animal be vaccinated for rabies within the
past 12 months.
    * Currently, American does not require documentation regarding the
sedation of a pet, nor do we restrict sedated animals. Consult your
veterinarian about the use of tranquilizers.

That is strange I used American Eagle and didn't check their site but
I called Americans 800 number and she told me that the policies for
American and American Eagle were the same and they required the
certificate I didn't pursue it because the breeder had the certificate
done already. American was new to the breeder too he uses Continental
most of the time I guess.

Who knows maybe the policy was changed and they didn't change it on
the website or maybe even more likely the customer service rep I
talked to may have been wrong.

I realize customer service is one of the toughest jobs out there but I
just bought a new cell phone and was combing the manual for an option
that I had on every phone I have ever owned and couldn't find it so I
called customer service and asked them about it and he told me it
wasn't available on this phone. I asked if he was sure because its a
very usefull option and he said nope sorry.

Two days later I couldn't stand it and I called again and got the same
answer from another rep but this time I asked for the manufacturers
phone number I called them and they said certainly you can do it and
quickly explained to me how to do it.....sigh....now I am hooked for
life to never take a negative answer from customer service without
checking further......

Sorry I'm sure I told you more than you wanted to here.....lol.....

Brad

Rhonda - 05 Jul 2005 04:44 GMT
Yep, I think this whole society is in too much of a hurry. We throw
people onto the phones for the least possible salary and training, then
are surprised when customers are angry with the service. The under-paid,
under-trained person on the other end of the phone gets the brunt of it.

I once called an airline to use an upgrade certificate for a client
going to Mexico City. It was a North American certificate, good for
anywhere in N.A. The United rep on the other end argued that it was not
good to Mexico, only to North America. I could not convince her
otherwise! I even asked her to name the 3 countries that are in NAFTA.
She told me the cert wasn't good because you needed a passport to get to
Mexico. Ahhhh! I told her you needed one for Canada too! Later, I told
the United sales rep that they have got to give basic geography training
before putting someone on the phone.

Off track.

By the way, I know of a person who called Delta to arrange two cats to
be flown (in baggage) to Seattle. She called and was told they needed
health certificates. It took much time and trouble for her to get off
work and get them. Then she checked in with the cats -- and they didn't
even ask for the certificates, so who knows anymore. I guess check the
website and call 2 or 3 times.

I forgot to mention when I picked my cat up I went to front desk and
they required photo ID and another form of id and handed me three
pieces of paperwork and said I had to show them these papers and ID at
the overhead door where the animals are delivered to their owners,
there was five dogs and three cats on the flight my cat came up first
and I walked up to the attendant and she said is this one yours? I
said yes and she handed the crate to me and said cute kitten and that
was it no ID no nothing.....lol.....maybe a good place to get a
quality dog or cat for free......

nice chattin with ya.....

God I hope not or else someone is probably getting a lot of mail :-)

The above quote BTW was referring to flying in small private planes
such as Cessnas that make a car ride seem pleasant in comparison for
cats. I chopped the quoting enough to lose that reference.

It's closer to 1200 one way. Another recent message on this thread gives
the updated road miles, figure about 90% of that for the air miles.
