CONAN!

Just making a new thread to draw attention to this!

Charlie Wilkes in Bellingham, WA said he may be able to take Conan into
a one cat, one dog home. This is potentially very good news. Can
someone send him pictures of the cat (I know they were posted here at
one point) and put him in touch with the Dan-guy in So Cal?

It sounds like we need someone on the ground in that area to volunteer
to pick the cat up from the shelter and fly with him from Orange County
to Sea-Tac, where Charlie can pick him up. As I understand it, his
adoption fee is already covered, so what the group needs to do is put
together the funds or the FF miles to buy a an airline ticket. American
Airlines flies direct, but it's not cheap. Anybody have FF miles on
American? The it's just $80 to fly the cat in the cabin.

I'm happy to make the flight arrangements once a volunteer is found if
someone can donate the miles.

Cheers,

Tracy

Yes.  I can definitely take the cat and provide him with a good home.
I understand the concern people have about him.  I am neutral on the
personal decisions that brought about this concern, however.

I don't think he needs an escort on the plane.  It is no worse than
traveling in a cat carrier in the car.

I will clear the spam out of my mailbox in case anyone wants to
contact me.

Charlie,

This is great news. However, I'd really like to avoid
cargo-transporting the cat. He's already been through a lot and that is
SCARY. If the group can work it out, then I think it's better for
everyone to have someone fly him up in the passenger cabin.

I would too.  Cargo scares the crap out of me.  I'm  not sure if this is
still true, but I've heard that if you fly with an animal in the cabin, you
have to take it out of the carrier at security check.  So, whoever is
escorting Conan should put a harness and leash on him before putting him in
the carrier.

I'll send money, all I can do is $25 right now things are really tight with
the babies coming and we're about to refinance the house.  Just post where
to send it!

While I'm trying not to volunteer to coordinate this - lol, it sounds
to me like there's three phases and maybe if we take them in order,
it'll be easier to get it together.

Step 1 - Somebody (maybe Mary since you've already talked to them)
calls the shelter, explains the potential adopter and that we're
looking for a volunteer to take the cat to Seattle.  The shelter
probably has an adoption application they can fax to Charlie and he can
fax it back.

Step 2 - We need to find someone in Southern California who can spend a
Saturday picking up the cat at the shelter, has access to a harness and
an airline-approved carrier and can take Conan to Seattle where Charlie
can pick him up. No money needed, just time and cat handling skills.
Maybe Dan (who I don't know, but is apparently active in cat rescue in
the area) can be tapped to find a shelter volunteer who has the time?

Step 3 -  The direct flights seem to be on American Airlines and like
all
airline tickets, you can have one quickly or you can have one cheap,
but not both. The easiest thing would be donated FF miles. Anybody have
any on AA? I could donate on UA, but a direct flight is better.  It's a
good cause. If we can do that, then it's easy enough to raise the $80
for Conan's fare and book the ticket for the volunteer. I have a Paypal
account at this e-mail address, but let's not donate anything until we
have the shelter paperwork, the volunteer and the FF miles worked out.

Mary, can you work on steps one and two and report back to the group?
And in the meantime .... anybody with FF miles can pipe up right now.

Nice to see this group doing something positive  :>

I can do this.

I did this. Dan has agreed to receive the adoption fee via PayPal and
pick Conan up from the shelter. I will send the adoption fee plus gas
money--what Dan needs to go get him. Also, I have Dan's permission
to give his cell phone # to whoever needs it.

So you have already worked out the options? I must have missed a post.
AA will fly Conan for $80 in the cabin if someone will accompany him?
Then how much for the round trip ticket? Sorry if I missed this.

Step 2 is taken care of. I am frankly afraid to call the shelter and
ask about an out-of-town adoption today because I have the feeling
Katherine might say "we don't do that." But the call has got to be made
today, since Conan is up for re-evaluation in four days. I'm calling now ...

I would have to agree. :)

I don't know if the shelter's adoption policy specifies that the human
doing the adoption keep the animal in his possession for a given period
of time. If not, and they don't do out-of-town adoptions, then I would
be willing to adopt Conan myself then adopt him out in turn to the
fellow in WA. Seems to me like it wouldn't be especially dishonest since
the end result is the same - Conan placed in a Forever Home.

Oh, Dan. You qualify as a "local" don't you?! (Given how huge
California is. This is just wonderful. I guess we see what happens
when Katherine calls Rhonda back, but your offer means that
this is likely going to happen. Thank you so much.

With all the help I've been getting from the R.P.C.A. folks in saving
the life of my little baby Harri Roadcat, how could I not reciprocate by
trying to help save another kitty in need?

Well it could not happen without you. You are an angel.

Don't drop the ball, Dan.  If you do, these women will castrate you with
their teeth.

You have no idea what an incredible a.shole you are for saying that.  Dan is
in the midst of an heroic fight to save the life of his own little orange
stripey girl.  She had two collapsed lungs, and it's costing Dan *THOUSANDS*
of dollars to get her well (which he had to use his disability check to pay
for).  She's currently in a specialist vet. hospital with tubes in her
chest.  And in the middle of this he's volunteering to help clean up the
*sh.t YOU CAUSED* - HE DOESN'T WANT TO HEAR sh.t FROM AN a.shole WHO
WOULDN'T PAY $200  FOR LAB TEST FOR HIS SICK CAT SO TOOK HIM BACK TO A KILL
SHELTER.

f.cking a.shole!  DO us all a favor and f.ck OFF AND DIE!

ESPECIALLY die, Arty. Do you think you can do that, and make the world a
better place?

Oh man, I didn't see a new thread was started!

I have already left a message at the shelter.

Should we kill one thread and try to keep the messages in sync so we are
not duplicating efforts?

Rhonda--you go ahead and start the thread--and deal with
Katherine at the shelter, too--to avoid confusion!!

This is a fascinating and inspirational effort. Would people please continue
to keep the newsgroup updated?

Also, can someone re-post what the story on Conan is? For newbies and so I
don't have to google... ;-)

Oops, I see the story in the Conan Airlift thread.

Also, thanks to the Philip who posted the photos.

He's a handsome red fellow.

Good point.

Rhonda or Charlie - if either of you go down to get him, I have a
crate, leash, and several cat halters if you need them. No need to
buy.

Not sure about the crate requirements, so I'm not sure if mine is the
right type or size. But if it is, you are welcome to use it.

Hi Megan,

That's great! The crate has to fit under a seat. American's dimensions
were 23 X 13 X 9 maximum.

If you have that size -- I can pick it up from you.

Also, we should probably get him a name tag w/a phone number. I don't
like traveling with animals without an ID on them. I could get the tag,
I'll ask Charlie what he would want on it.

Mine is too big. 23 x 14 x 12

My parents might have a smaller one. I will ask them tomorrow.

Also, I just checked craigslist, and I found one that will work if it
is still available. I just sent an email to see if I can get it.

I'm off work Monday, so I can go get it.

Oh, wow! Now I kknow why I've been so moved to help out with the SoCal
end of Conan's adoption. He looks so much like my two red cats, Harri
Roadcat and Samuel Redcat. You can see both of them at
